Team as it stands

Recommended Posts

We need to strengthen that defence without a shadow of doubt ,  couple of strong centre half signings has to be a priority and I’m not really into this experienced 35yr old clogger nonsense ,  we’ve got experience in this squad

skipper

Iorfa

Palmer

Johnson

Hunty

Gregory

We need some centre half signings that have some potential,  Jack Tucker and Will Boyle both good ages and showing promise , god forbid we might land on a player who we could make a few quid off down the line …. That’s what we got to look at doing to move forwards as a football club

Agreed. He pretty much never dropped Hutch and as the season has ended he's the only fit CH he was picking every game, yet he's released him. He must have replacements lined up that he's confident about and who he believes will improve the side.  There's also the possibility that he'll try 4-2-3-1 again which will need 1 less CH. I wonder what the chances are that Dean and/or Gibson are already lined up.

Another positive for me is that he's released Berahino, purely because it shows he's not overly sentimental and he's also prepared to release a player he championed.

Another thought around 4-2-3-1, I wonder if he's looking at that again and thinking he could try Gregory with Windass & NML from either side and Bannan in the hole. Sort of replicate Sunderland with having Pritchard in the hole and Clarke and Roberts either side.

I think we’ll stick with 3 at the back but I do agree I think he will have Gibson and Dean back. Then he’ll just need another 1 with Brennan and Palmer as back up.

We need that player like Corbeanau was who can do something special that but of magic. Not always gonna come off but can

Win us games on his own that’s what we really lack.

Sylla Sow, it puzzled me when he wasn't on the released list, I assumed he'd be out of contract. Who gave that useless chuff a 2 year deal? We didn't need him then, we can't release him now, even though we've let Berahino go who was ahead of him in the pecking order and is a far better player.

Based on the players offered deals signing…

Dawson

Brennan

Iorfa

Palmer

J Hunt

Luongo

Byers

Bannan

Johnson

Windass

Gregory

Subs from

Wildsmith

Brown

Adeniran

Dele-Bashiru

A Hunt

Mendez-Laing

Sow

Paterson

Even with no signings that team would be among the favourites to go up I imagine.

Midfield looks very strong.

Could do with another striker and specialist wing-back to provide back-up / competition

Question mark for me over the quality of the keepers

Defenders clearly the overwhelming priority. Only 2 recognised centre backs in a squad whose major weakness last season was set-piece and late goals. Minimum two proven quality defenders needed.

Iorfa is a car crash..mistake after mistake..

Midfield needs legs. Youth. Energy. We need at least two young lads for the wide positions.

FDB hopefully will really challenge for a starting berth this year adding a bit of energy to that middle.

We also need some legs up top and a couple of centre backs.

Big transfer window. We could go up very strong if we recruit well.

The 4-2-3-1 as you have described it there makes so much sense for the players you mentioned. It releases Windass and, particularly, NML from defensive duties plus it allows Bannan to continue his three-way combo (ooh Matron) with Byers and Luongo. Moore must be going for that formation

For me the starting 11 needs a new keeper. Marosi/ Bazunu. Think we need a new back 3, I wouldn’t want Palmer or Iorfa starting in a back 3, so fingers crossed we get 3 in the door. Maybe Tucker/Boyle/Dean as we’ve been linked with them all. Middle 5 stays the same for me, Hunt, Bannan, Byers and Johnson are certs if Hunt signs up, then we have Denis and FDB in reserve if Luongo doesn’t sign. Then a new, younger striker to play with Gregory.

One more addition in midfield and you'd be pretty close

The issue with a club like ours maintaining a style of play is that every year we rely on getting new players in for free and when we don't get them we have to make do with what we have.

100% agree with your comments about midfield.  If FDB is to make it he needs to break into the team and perform next season.
