Goalkeeper

Both myself and my Exeter mate think he is probably a league 1 keeper

He's a very good shot stopper, but he stays on his line alot, he doesn't command his area, and he still has spells where he looks shakey

I believe there are better keepers available at the moment, and we will need better to get out of this division

We are a league 1 team, we didnt get promoted, so we need a league 1 keeper.

Think everyone is remembering when we were in the championship and half the players didnt want to play. If the defenders in front of him werent trying what chance did the lad have.

Dawson and Wildsmith both always seemed to be confidence type players. With things going good, they looked decent enough keepers. However as soon as a mistake was made by them, or the team played bad and the fans got restless, the ability and confidence seemed to drain from them.

Keepers need to be confident in thier own ability at all times, even in the bad patches. Cant help feeling that if Dawson did what BPF did against Ipswich, hed never have recovered.

He's just helped Exeter to achieve promotion and was runner up for player of the season. Exeter fans raved about him and the club tried to tie him down permanently.

He's 26 and under contract with us until 2024.

Why would we not have him back as our number 1?

Have Exeter made an offer for him then ?

Both Dawson and Wildsmith are steady league one keepers,   I believe Cameron Dawson’s confidence is shot to play at S6 though

Both need to move on,  I feel sorry for Dawson to be fair would’ve liked to see him establish himself here

Unfortunately we’ll probably bring in some journeyman keeper for a season, and then go back to square 1 in 12month

Sure I read somewhere that Exeter were making enquiries towards the end of his loan, I guess either for an extension or to bring him onboard permanently. Moore wanted to bring him back to see how he gets on preseason, apparently.

No we don't...  we need a Championship keeper as a minimum...  preferably on a permanant deal so WHEN we go up next season we still have a decent keeper.

Any new players coming in will need to be 3 things.

i) cheap

ii) no transfer fee

iii) not wanted by other teams.

We lost in the playoffs semi last monday, the new season starts 30 July 2022, presumably preseason will 4 or 5 weeks before then, so the club have realistically 6 weeks to start bringing players in, sign existing ones, arrange a pre season friendly list, get the new shirts out etc etc.

they should be announcing this week the retained list, but from the sounds of some of the players they have not been contacted yet.

We will pick up another BPF type from a Premier League club hopefully.

Both BPF and Bazunu have had excellent seasons in league 1, both now established as International keepers. I expect Bazunu will go on loan to a Championship club, and BPF will challenge Pope for the number 1 shirt at Burnley.

Plenty of decent keepers 3rd or 4th choice at top Premier League sides, it seems loans are the way to go for this position anyway.

Why stop there?

Personally I think a PL keeper is the minimum we should be looking at. One with CL and/or international tournament experience.

Lumley not wanted at Boro

Smithies set to be on a free, still only 32

Blackman set to be released

Matt Ingram available on a free

Some decent keepers who won't cost the earth

Boro fans rate Lumley as one of there worst ever keepers

Blackman never been a first choice anywhere apart from Rotherham where he lost his place there too

Matt Ingram, not seen enough of him but  just going off the goal he conceded in the play offs is not good enough. Awful goalkeeping.

Smithies would be decent though and been a Yorkshire lad we might stand a decent chance.

I'd love us to have Smithies and then Ingram or Blackman as his competitors.

Think for league 1 that would be good cover in GK, and at a lower cost then BPF and Wildsmith were last season.

The game moves on so quickly

Last season was the best quality League 1 I've ever seen

MK Dons finished on 89 points and didn't get promoted

Plymouth finished on 80 points and didn't make the play offs

The division will be tougher this year

We need to sign players capable of playing Championship football

Teams who sign an average League One quality player will end up playing League One football

Dawson didn't make the league 2 team of the season

Goalkeeper is a specialist position, a good goalkeeper can earn you an extra 10 points per season

We need to make sure our keeper next season is amongst the best in the division, if not we will get nowhere

I don't think Dawson is anymore than a mid table League One player, nothing I've seen from him this season suggests anything else

Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.
