Game management last 5/10 minutes

Recommended Posts

Game management has got slightly better dare I say it, we booted and headed most of the long balls out last night - but we do make it hard for ourselves when we're already in the final third of the pitch and even in the corners, it seems to land back to their players/keeper too quick when we've had possession.

We got the ball in the top left maybe 3-4 times last night, but we didn't try and work a throw in or hold it up for time and pi55 about with it kicking it out of play and slowing it down, which we see countless team do against us. At one point the ball ended all the way back to our back 3 and nearly had a mis-hap on the dodgy pitch, heart in mouth moment.

Fall over in the corners, work a throw in, if we lose the ball - then knock it out into touch further and step in front of the defender etc etc - feel like we need to get a bit more cuter at this.

I thought it was quite refreshing that we didn't blatantly time waste, it's happened so often to us this season and it really makes me angry, Hulk like angry.

We largely continued to play with confidence, still looking for goals, and I enjoyed that. I think it puts us in a different class.

Agree with you re ethics but the final object is to win. If we have to win dirty then so be it .

95mins on Saturday just doing enough to stay in play offs there can be be NO messing. Dive, fall down, fake head butt, kick the ball out of the ground anything to make sure we win.

If it's 9-0 to us then cancel that.

Thought we looked comfortable after we scored the third. Slowed the game down a bit, kept possession, while still taking opportunity to attack when possible.

Didn't think we looked like conceding again and Dunkley coming on made sure the back door was firmly shut.

Ok, I'll give you that, when it really gets down to the wire the gloves have to come off. In fact I could actually imagine the Binman punching somebody.

Dunkley coming on was a good move, they started punting it and he won everything in air in those last few minutes.

Not his biggest fan but probably deserves a start Saturday.

Pompey play the ball in behind and to feet up front. We need a centre back who is decent on the turn.

Absolutely.

Dunkley isn't a starter in this case - difficult choice, but I reckon DM will drop Palmer and replace with Dean to solidify the back, which is a shame as we will lack the drive from defence up the field which Palmer brings.

Nah. Against Crewe and against Fleetwood we looked very comfortable tbh. I’ve said it in another thread but in both games it was US who got closer to scoring.

Obviously teams are gonna come at us if they’re losing with 5 mins left. Nature of the beast.

Thought we managed it very well. Once we went ahead Fleetwood never looked like scoring. BPF commanded his area well. Dunkley got some great headers away. NML, Windass, Bannan and Patto all worked well to keep the ball up the pitch. Thought our throws from Hunt in the corner were good as well.

No danger.

I think Palmer did that really well last night. As did Hutch 2nd half. Wonder if Moore might go Hutch Dean/Storey Palmer?
