If we had Windass available for just 20 games this season we would be going up

His cutting edge would have taken us through some of those really tight games

Maybe. But the issue has been at the other end, conceding goals from set pieces etc.

I see it the other way round tbh

We put so much pressure on defending set pieces due to the lack of cutting edge

Any team at the top of the league should be able to concede 1-2 goals and still win, for a big chunk of the season we failed to do that

I just feel positive about us right now. We have a good team who are playing exciting football. If we don’t go up this season we will go up automatically next season I’m sure of it. DM has made plenty of errors but seems to be able to learn from them and we seem to be able to attract decent players. Injuries have ravaged us this season and we are still in the playoffs and coming into good form at the right time. We can even spend fees in the close season if we need to (maybe on a striker?). It’s all good.

Windass would have buried those chances at Bolton and at home to Rotherham.

Yep.

We have, at times, lacked a clinical edge, particularly away from home.

For this level, we have some seriously good players with bags of experience too. Last night felt like a real showing of what we can do. For 45 minutes, we made arguably the form team look like a local pub side.

There were numerous things stuck in the bean as we looked ahead to this season.

The hangover of relegation being one thing. Losing becomes a habit. Cycles form.

Bad habits can become ingrained.

Then there was the threadbare squad. How many players (first I mean, not kids making up the numbers) did we have available for pre-season training?

Then there was the late cluster of signings.

Was it 13 or 14? All late in the day. All needed to integrate to a new club, new city, new style etc.  And of course all trying to get the volume!

Then we start and the balance isn't right. A few look off the pace or lost.

We're hoping for them to 'gell'

Then the inevitable injury pile up begins.

All things considered I think we're about where we should be. But things all seem to be coming together at the right time.

I'd fancy us to beat anyone on the day if tis is where we finish.

If not, I am more optimistic about next season. We seem to have a nice balance now.

Though I do understand those that hold by the theory that every year in this league makes it harder and harder.

I get frustrated every summer when we have our squad wander in after a few weeks off, don't sign any new players until after the season has started, and just wobble into the season like some half arsed tired slobs - and everyone's like 'don't worry - it's early on in the season - lots of games to go!'

Does my head in

If we played with the intensity that we did last night, if we showed that passion, that resolve, that energy, that attacking approach, that urgency then we'd fly!

It was like a cup semi final last night

Imagine if we also started the season with that approach?

Instead we sign players after the season's started and just slowly walk into the new season as though it's just a practice session

Last night was how things should be

I LOVED it

Was a cracking performance and day out.

Thats 9 points from the top 3 on our travels and no win was lucky.

Although of course we had to suffer a heart attack when it went to 3-2!

Never understood the 'we are the best team in the division on our day' argument. Technically could every team not say that? The team that have had the most 'days' are Wigan. We are the 5th best team in the League over 40+ games. The table doesnt lie.

It's not that hard a concept, really.

Yes, over the course of the season we've been 5th best thus far, but all it's saying is that with a fully-fit squad (or thereabouts, at least), and playing our best football, nobody else in the division can best us on the day, all things being equal.

It's immaterial in terms of the final table, of course, but I understand the sentiment.

Yep, his absence has been massive.

Especially when you think back to the first half of the season when we dropped so many points - his presence could have made all the difference.

We just need to find those days a little bit more. Fine margins.

Consistency needed for the remaining games going Into the playoffs, nobody will beat us if were on form

Why Windass? That’s not the issue.

Berahino and Gregory together have been off the scale. A 5 and a 3 in their two starts as a duo.

The issue is why on Earth we have chosen to start NML up top rather than put this pair together.

However, it’s certain now that Moore will keep them together after last night, which is great for the run-in and play-offs.
