Do Sheffield Wednesday F.C. get bullied too much in midfield?

Of course we do.

On a slight tangent this is where the likes of myself and others are on the whole Bannan thing. Of course we all like him. Good player, stays fit and always gives 100%. Is he value for money, should we cater our entire game around him and is suited to League One? If we go up it's worked but if not it's no and a big failure. Sadly I suspect the latter.

Promotion side of 2012 had a back four mainly of centre halfs in Buxton, Batth, Jones, Liera, Reda with Semedo sat in front of that. Add to that JOC who would put a foot in, Lines wasn't as lightweight as Bannan and we had pace, power n quality down sides with JJ, Marshall, Treacey and Antonio. Add likes of COG and Madine to that we certainly didn't get bullied by anyone and good at set pieces at both ends. Unlike current lot.

So, yes we do and not just in midfield.

Agree with defence, but think your overplaying the midfield. JOC was tiny and got bullied by most, lines was never one for putting his foot in either. Teams didn’t bully us mainly because of the defence that year.

Bullying nope..not good enough is the reason.

There are only 4 decentish sides in the entire league. And two or three okayish.

That's why all our 'main' competitors keep winning because the rest are very average to very poor. And that's why the points total for 6th place will be much higher than the norm.

And here we are struggling for 6th place because either the players are not good enough or more likely our leader ain't good enough.

All in my humble opinion of course.

Not persuaded we get bullied in midfield, but I know we’d have a fair few more more points on the board but for abysmal defending from set pieces and crosses.

Managers fault? Possibly, but to be fair he’s brought in some good players for this level.

Expect more of the same before we miss out on the play offs.

In previous years and earlier this season in part,. yes.

But the problem more so is a lack of ability to pick apart teams that sit deep.

Take Gillingham last weekend, did we need to play Luongo? A team that didn't have any interest incoming forward unless there was a near certain chance of a counter. Do we not need Luongo for games where we might come up against a team that will try and play a bit more in midfield.

I agree with some of the others further up saying it's issues elsewhere, lack of creativity when Bannan isn't having a good game. That's where we need to improve in the summer.

3 very similar types of player in the centre, they only flourish when the wingbacks get forward and profit from the gaps, when that doesnt happen, theres no strength or authority to run directly through the heart of the opposition and drive the opposition back, instead they try and pass through, but the middle gets too congested and the ball comes back.

A big targetman would be an outlet to hold the ball up, or just drop byers and stick Iorfa there and let him steamroller through the middle

Depends on opposition if the can’t match us technically then sone particularly the lower end teams will nullify our midfield by either going long and bypassing them and hitting us with height and physicality in the middle

Accrington was a fine example of that, all midfielders over 6ft yet still played high line  and went long completely missing out midfield play and making us non existent

teams who have technical players and playmakers in the middle still trying and use them and this is generally at their loss if the ball is on the floor in our possession in midfield I’d fancy Us 8/10 from doing something positive against most opposition with luongo, bannan, Byres in there

what we need to do is figure out quickly what game were in if it’s not working and change it

when teams play against us with physicality it always worries me because you know they are parking the bus going long the game will be awful and they will knick it with a set piece due to them having. 9/10 outfield players over 6ft

it’s where we massively miss players like attey but with dele now on the bench and return of defenders we really should  not be losing in the same way now it’s as if we haven’t learned

controversial comment here ( and I’m not asking for it to be done just good for thought )

if we’re playing in a game where the midfield is getting missed out and out fought basically there’s no point in having them because it’s not working and you know we’re going to be out matches on set pieces just due to height

are we not better replacing someone like bannan with a dunkley or Iorfa and  moving hutch in middle and Byres with a dele

getvthe height on the pitch and get in a fight your less likely conceding on set pieces only worry is how do we score because the game would be horrific to watch

Yes. Especially when players are in our faces. If Baz, Byres and Mas aren’t given time to play then we can be easily nullified. If they are, then it can be curtains for the opposing side.

Need a Mo Diame type in there who was not only strong as an ox, but could play.  Those types cost unless you unearth a gem with good scouting.

Absolutely this. Its so obvious when this happens all 3 go off the boil. These should all be plying there trade in the championship when skill is allowed to blossom not like this horrible league. -

We don't get bullied we get physically overpowered or man-marked out of the game. Not in most games but so obviously against teams with more powerful and physical midfield players.

We need depth not replacements.  Have down since losing at Wembley ...that's what's do frustrating!

Re: post above ... it happened even more in the league above.

We don't get bullied, but we do get neutralised.

All of the time we have no long option, we're too easy to counter. Just mark up and it'll end up with BPF.

The biggest issue with our midfield that doesn't get mentioned is the amount of stupid, dirty fouls they give away in harmless situations near the halfway line that turn into dangerous free kicks.
