Matty Blair

Loved Andy Blair. Tidy and energetic. Of the Chapman Blair Marwood trilogy HW signed in time for 84-85: three seemingly uninspiring signings, all three turned out to be tremendous and totally inspired.

I liked Blair’s white ankle tape around the base of his blue socks. Genuine 1st division midfielder who propelled us to be top 4 almost all of that season. Like many others and the manager, incredibly underrated, even in our own club history. Make no mistake, this team was remarkable, they went and beat the European Champions in their own back yard, did Man Utd on New Years day at OT. Smashed all and sundry at Hillsborough all season and even bloodied Everton’s (the champions) nose twice. This team had it, had the board backed Wilkinson, SWFC could have gone that step further.

Blair was a vital part of our team that was like a machine, in the days when football was physical, brutal, muck and bullets. Regarded unfairly at the end by some as nesh, he wasn’t, he mixed it all season in 84-85 and pushed us close to the top of the game.

One of the best.

I’m sure he’ll be at Hillsborough on Saturday supporting his lad. Andy is a great bloke. Got talking to him just last week at “an evening with Sky Blue legend…….Roland Nilsson” (Yes really!) at which he was hosting. Said he took a pay cut to come to Wednesday, but never regretted it. I think both of his lads grew up as Wednesdayites which says everything.

Last match

But I'm expecting you to come back with some technicality as you do

If I was to come back with technicality then that would be because there was one. Sorry to disappoint you
