Brentford are the perfect example. Spent most of their existence in the lower leagues, but now putting much bigger clubs to shame.

Good point Brentford as Chansiri said at the Forum ,We do not want to be like Brentford they have no ambition ,And they sell the clubs best players.

Thats a fair point, however its not like we haven't been here before plus when we're comparing ourselves to other teams in terms of present performance we need to include present data in the comparison.

Our fall from grace hasn't really been recent, we've not been relevant in terms of the pointy end of the pyramid in over 20yrs. and out 'golden period' in the 21st century has still been within the last 4-5yrs, before which we had 15 years of dross similar to what we're now experiencing. We're just not a great team or a great club unless you bring ancient history into it, we're a Bolton, Coventry or Sunderland rather than any number of other teams which are / we're more established in the top division.

Here's what I got for average league position by decade:

1890s 11th

1900s 6th

1910s 10th

1920s 21st

1930s 14th

1940s 30th

1950s 19th

1960s 11th

1970s 47th

1980s 18th

1990s 12th

2000s 41st

2010s 36th

2020s (so far) 47th

1940s was only 4 seasons because of World War 2. We were garbage in the 70s.

Other than that, until our relegation in 2000 since the inception of the football league in 1892 our average league position in each decade was within the top flight (bar the 70s). We're being criminally mismanaged.
