Throwing flares, pack it in

Recommended Posts

I’ve been to quite a few matches overseas and you see them all of the time. The first time I saw them over here was when we played Benfica pre season a few years back but you see them all the time now before during and after games. I can see why people might think it’s a bit of fun and they do creat a spectacle and all that but it is a criminal offence to even have one on you. Hardly worth getting a criminal record and a ban for a bit of coloured smoke IMO.

My main worry is we will end up getting an away fan ban if we don’t stop throwing stuff/ getting on the pitch/ letting of flares etc. That would be a massive shame because our away fans are one of our biggest things to be proud of as a club.

I don't personally understand why people do but I am of a certain age. If no real harm is done then I don't mind, we scored. When we scored when I was a lad we could surge in the Kop. I enjoyed it, couldn't do it now.

I know this was directed at the individual poster but IMO what any fan finds acceptable or unacceptable in this context is way less relevant that what the cops and then EFL think. It’s illegal. If it becomes ‘a thing’ even more than it is then people will crack down on someone. And I’d bet good money it will be us!

Yes. Let's ban our most loyal fans.

Fact is our away following is a diverse group. Are there young lads, behaving like dickheads? Yes.

Was I like that 20 years ago? Probably.

There's still loads of people that go and enjoy the game. Loads of people stood near me today in their 60s, poss 70s.

Can't we just enjoy an away game without trying to homogenise it into some bland, corporate style experience.

The guy complaining about his kid being scared on radio sheff earlier sums it up for me. Parental responsibility. If his 9 year old doesn't like rowdy crowds, don't take them to an away football match.

I agree, I don't take my kids away  (mostly because we don't have enough points). Hopefully we will against Bolton away where we should be on the edges.

I find most people in life, definitely including at Hillsborough, are kind and considerate in front of kids.

Ive just seen the goal again and it looks like the flare was thrown straight at Pato and Bannan. It may sound over the top but ‘IF’ it had hit one our players or anyone for that matter. The person responsible would possibly be doing time. Remember what happened a few years ago at the lane?

The first time I remember seeing flares was Kaiserslautern in the uefa cup. I was probably only 12 and I can honestly say I've never seen anything like that in the away end that night. I could be wrong but leppings lane seemed totally full and when they scored the flares lit it up. I was a bit stunned.

And a man was killed at Wales National Statdium a few years ago after being hit in the chest by a marine flare launched from the opposite stand. Last year a 7-year-old was hit in the face by a flare chucked by a Hull fan into some Barnsley fans just a couple of months ago. There have been other incidents with fans throwing flares at English matches including Telford and Bolton since then.

Deaths and serious injury caused by flares are more common in some other major leagues.

These things burn at up to 1600C which will easily melt skin and bone.

Whilst the missile thrown today looked more like a smoke bomb and not a flare, it's just stupid chucking things like this around and it is inevitable that, again, someone else will be seriously hurt or even killed by one of these items.

Please resist the temptation to start lobbing these things about.

Did they throw them at people?

The last bit about a kid being scared goes two ways.

5 of us were in Donny all day and yes there was a few problems with Donny .

After a long escort to the ground we were finally left to walk the last 50 yards. And we saw the young lad.

He was more scared about his dad getting in trouble with police than he was the wednesday support.

Away end looked excellent today I thought.

Possibly most police I've seen at a wednesday away game for many years.

Yet they simply escorted us on a walk from town then let us walk around stadium and into home end.

Have your flare. Set it off and deal with it, get props from your pals, make it safe. It's all good.

Don't throw the f00ker while it's still burning onto the pitch or anywhere else, risking injury to others and giving up your personal responsibility for setting off said flare in the first place.

That makes you a total d1ck4ead who needs a good slap.
