striker
Been implied by a few local journos that change is coming. Alex Miller again discussing the merits after Wing's departure and makes a good point. In theory it should work and suit the players, but didn't look comfortable when I saw us earlier on the season. Yes, we were solid defensively and picked up points, but poor going forward, the striker often isolated and more of an ever deeper lying 451. Will be interesting to see how we manage this next run of games with brittle players and fewer midfield and forward (until Gregory fit again) options. bigrbuk
We've only just started looking like we know how to play the current formation, especially with proper defenders in the back 3, so now we're going to change it all again?
pazowl55
What are they going on that we are going to switch the formation? Just because Wing has left. He wasn't getting a game anyway and we have just signed two brand new centre backs and not bothered with getting in a left back.

So are the noises from Moore it seems over the last few weeks, given comments and musings by those who have spoken to him pre/post games. I agree this system (while not my favourite) has shown signs of starting to click.
Bouncing Owl
I don’t see it. Think we will go with 3-5-2 for rest of the season.
S72 Owl
I can’t see it, we’ve only really got Mendez-Laing as a natural winger now so moving to a 4-2-3-1 would be strange.
SallyCinnamon
Why change the formation when it’s starting to click? We signed two central defenders to stop leaking goals. Don’t need to complicate things further. 3
WorrallOwl17
may aswell have used Theo more if we was going back to a 4-2-3-1, that formation was tailor made for him and Shodipo, would be strange to go back to it now the players look like they're capable of playing 3-5-2. McRightSide
TBF you can understand Alex Miller wondering about this...he probably thinks the contracts of Dean and Storey expire at the weekend.

The current formation is getting us goals, and now that we have actual defenders, we should be able to keep clean sheets, too. Not sure why we'd change it at this point, based on what we've seen. Who would play up top on their own?

Pieman
We’ve just played Plymouth, Oxford and Ipswich and outplayed them all. With Dean and Storey on the pitch v Oxford, we win all three. We need to stick with this formation.
paulrs
Buy loads of wingers and your centre backs get injured - play a formation with three centre backs and no wingers Buy two centre backs and lose two wingers - switch to a back four Makes perfect sense. 1
Miffed
The issue with the formation is failure to adapt when other teams make changes mid game to counter our system, particularly away from home. Prime example was Oxford away. They noticed gaps that they could exploit, made the changes and got on the front foot, while our response to that was almost like for like substitutions and nothing done to restrict the threat. Also Sunderland where it clearly wasnt working Hopefully the new defenders continue to give us a stronger back line, but if youre going to persist with 3-5-2 you need to be able to engage the defensive element of the formation when needed. room0035
Have we entered a time machine and gone back 5 months? Why would we bring in 2 centre backs so we can play 3-5-2 then switch to 4 at the back. 3-5-2 is here to stay until we pick up injuries at the back. Th en we will probably play Palmer and Johnson there again. iorfa and Dunkley will be back this season so at some point that hives us another 2 options at centre back. The only way is S6
We seemed a bit exposed down our left on Satdy. Ipswich got well into our half, and our area, a few times before being challenged & their biggest threats came from there. Luckily, they were poor with the final ball. We just didn't seem to have anybody wide left midfield covering in front of Johnson. Everywhere else was solid though so the formation obviously works overall. prowl
4-2-3-1 is the fashionable formation at present. It has a lot of advantages if you press their back line as they try to play out, close down the passing options, press the man with the ball and then they have to go long where your big CB's win possession. The trouble is you've got to be really good at pressing high up the field, I'm not sure we would be, it only needs one player to slip up and they are onto the defence with decent numbers. It's the sort of tactic that takes a lot of energy and a lot of practice, by the time we perfect it our season could be effectively over. I can see the temptation but think we should stick to what we know at least for the rest of this season.

We were exposed, Storey was off the pace early on and the back three looked like they had never played together - because they hadn't. The encouraging thing was that they sorted it out !
