Scariest ever away day experience

Middlesbrough away about 88, we won at Middlesbrough and as we were in Croftys coach we decided to call for a drink on the way back in a place called Knottingley. We all piled into a boozer that unbeknown to us was heavily populated with coked up Leeds fans.

We decided to drink up quick but before we finished it kicked off big time. We got chased all over Knottingley and everybody ended up in different directions, with some even running to the cop shop. My mate ended up in someone's house hiding for cover and another lad had been caught and duly dealt with.

Not the most pleasant of evenings but at least we won that day and I've never been back to Knottingley since.

I live close to Knottingley. It's still a dump.

I was at that game, and went on the coach, and I don't recall any of that. It was the only time I ever went to the old Den, and although it's up there with the worst grounds I've been to (stuck in the corner and unable to even see the goal at our end, just the crossbar) it wasn't particularly scary - although the scruff waving a knife about in their end was a bit odd.

Didn't do coach. But a fair few travelled on mini buses and 2 from mexborough.

Battled all day then most turned away from ground about 15 mins after ko.

Prob not that bad in ground as most wed and Millwall outside.

From the 90's -

Port Vale Away - Drew 1-1. Sat outside eating KFC with some friends. Main road for Vale fans heading to the ground. Some of them cam over to us and one spat in a persons food.

West Ham Away - 3-1 to us. West Ham fans bagging on coach windows as we were making our way to the parking area.

Millwall Away - 4-4 cup game (1991, FA cup 4th round). At cold blow lane. Their very young fans spent the entire match taunting and chanting at the Wednesday fans.

It was 30 years ago, wow, but I think it was KFC. Alan, Simon (use to live at Bradway) and I think a couple of girls were there. Fans came up saying, would you like to talk a walk with them ...... er.... N0 lol.

Cool. Had some fun times going to away games. Watford away with the tire blowing out on the motorway was definitely an experience.

April Fools day 1971 leading 1-0 HT We lost 3-1. Escorted out of a decent Luton Pub after the game for playing colours.

Now for Colours the rhyme went  :- "Starting with on my left Colours of Cups" the next bloke would pick up "Red Cups" as the rhyme was passed on,  so was a beer tray. and so it would continue;  "Starting with on my left Colours of Cups" the next bloke would pick up "Green Cups".

Eventually some one would fall or stutter. The tray would be passed to the next in line and he/she would smash the beer tray over the head of the person who slipped up.

All this was ok for first four or five shots but as the tray crinkled, blood began to trickle down our heads. The Landlord was in fits of laughter but as the mood changed he rang the police.

There was a bus load of us and at least a dozen playing colours. But within twenty minutes the police escorted us onto the M1 and on our way home.

Those two get my vote as well.

There's a Panorama documentary on F Troop with Charles Wheeler the reporter done in about '77. Some of the faces on that I still recognise from the Hillsborough game.

Here's the link:

Good looking bunch, it's a different world now.

I thought this was a couple of years later than that when Mirocevic scored first for us?

I was there and the walk to and back from the tube station was interesting to say the least

Been everywhere and seen lots of stuff but that Aldershot game really surprised me.
Nothing happened in the ground but could see a load of people to our left gathering outside the tiny ground.
walking back to coaches after when suddenly loads of Wednesdayites legged it past us and I could see one with blood streaming down his face.
Turned round and a big mob was yards behind us as we crossed a road.
Someone then shouted something and our fans turned, stopped running and then there was a standoff.
can’t remember what happened next but at the time we thought they were Chelsea fans for some reason.
it wasn’t the first time in the old third division that we’d arrive at some non-descript ground and during or after the game all the local hooligans would turn out just because it was us

That’s the game mate …. It’s was the army lads … there’s a large army training garrison at Aldershot… they must had Saturday afternoon off and thought “ let’s have them northerners”…..like you said … a lot of old 3 division grounds where dodgy places ……… Southend/ Lincoln/Port vale……..was less trouble in league 1 and 2

Wigan away 1977 standing on the side terrace at their old Springfield Park ground. Most matches that day had been postponed so a huge contingent of ManUre fans (whose game was also off) made the trip. The ground was basically a derelict dump with bricks everywhere. Never seen so much stuff raining down on both sides or so much blood and so many split heads.

Also remember the game at Chelsea in 1975; kicked off after the game. Saw one fan (not sure which side) with his hand impaled on a spike at the top of a fence. Still sends shivers down my spine to recall it.

Peterborough night match away - late seventies?

Wednesday fans went on kop early and fans already in the away end decide to cross the pitch and join in.

It was muddy.

I had Oxford Bags and Platform shoes on.

Running for 100 yards in the dark, through a seventies quagmire of a pitch at the back of the pack is no fun and seems to take forever.

Course as soon as I got to their kop, the coppers turned up and we had to run all the way back.

A copper was chasing me and trying to beat me like a ginger stepson.

I couldn't talk for ten minutes after I had thrown myself over the hoardings and back into the Wednesday mob.

Not my finest moment.

Think your memory may be a little clouded mate …… Definitely the locals as we met a couple of Wednesday lads who were  doing their army training in Aldershot at the time (and still attend home & away now) who pointed out the locals who they had trouble with every weekend!

Also it was a midweek game not a Saturday!
