Guest Mcguigan
The coverage is tinged with racism, crikey. I bet Mr Wrights BBC paymasters are loving that.
Ever the pessimist
Not sure it’s racism, just clubs wanting to have their players available. Which is selfish and disrespectful (it’s not like they didn’t know the player was African when they bought him), but not racist.
helmut_rooster
Don't care about the Africa cup of whatsit. England nor Wednesday are in it so I don't care. That's doesn't make me nor anyone else racist.
0wl18
It doesn’t get the same coverage as the World Cup, Copa America or the Euro’s because it’s mid-season. Like it or not, most fans want to see their team play more than their country. I get the point Wright is trying to make but, it’s not race. Its scheduling that’s the issue. If the English players had to choose between representing England or, the club which paid them 100k+ a week, the questions would be the same.
TheEnchanter
Agreed. The Afcon isn't as prestigious in Europe in the same way Copa America or the Asian Cup aren't. Same way the MLS isn't or League 1 and League 2 football aren't or even womens football.
Ellis Rimmer
It it didn’t happen during the middle of the season it would probably be a lot more popular here. I am sure it is much more similar to European football than copa America
edmontonowl
But what if the tables were turned? Africa has the world's best club league, the African Nations Cup is as important as the World Cup. Then along comes the European Championships and the African clubs won't release their European and British players because they need them for their league fixtures. How would the Euros/Brits react to that? The African players in Britain/Europe should be allowed to go. It's disrespectful at the the minimum to prevent them (probably contractually wrong as well).

But the competition basically ruins the league sometimes, for example Liverpool don’t have a chance now, they’ve been punished because their best players are African. If it’s to happen there should be better scheduling to fit everything in properly.

scram
Because Nigeria f*cked up Clubs cannot refuse to release players for FIFA competitions - even if injured/ill Quote Ranieri said Nigeria missed a deadline to advise the Premier League club that the forward was being considered for selection. BBC Sport Africa understands the NFF conceded it may have left it late and is now in a weakened position to request Dennis to travel. 1

scram
What, like a little backhander to an impoverished football authority for a player that was an afterthought anyway? Never...

It’s a problem of scheduling, I agree, but it’s not right for clubs to ***** about it.
