BPF MOTM could have had a perfect 10 but for standing like a rabbit under a search light as a bomb was falling on his head under the cross bar. Fortunately he got away with it and deserved his stroke of luck.

Tough luck on Luongo who got a touch on the ball that saw him sent off. He had a good game up to that point.

Palmer, Patterson and Hunt ran their legs off and Bannan too was a steadying influence.

The fact that Luongo got a touch on the ball is neither here or there

Very pleased with that performance - away , mid week, against a good team who come at you, a swirling wind and a team absolutely decimated by injuries.

Agree with many of these ratings, but I will call out Marvin Johnson.  No spring chicken and by no means a top class footballer, but I will say he is becoming a real cult hero back there and is playing very , very well.  Just the sort of footballer you need to get out of this league.

Would have taken a point when I saw the line up and even more so when Luongo was deservedly red carded.

BPF  Was excellent and a big shout for the makeshift back 3. Don't think the midfield were very creative but protected the defence and the forwards had a bad night.

BPF.    8.5   MoM very difficult conditions, miss timed a couple of balls  but generally very good with several excellent saves.

Patterson. 7.5  Thought he did really well, physically strong and decent distribution.

Palmer.  7.    Solid and competitive

Johnson.   6.5.  Thought Hirst got the better of him early doors but he then got to grips with him.

Hunt.  6.5. Gives good balance to midfield and usually available as an option.

Fizz.   6.5. Great run and shot, good ball to put Kamberi through. Very strong and rarely loses possesion. Think there is more to come as his confidence grows.

Luongo.  5.5.  Was solid protecting the defence but drops a point for the sending off.

Bannan 5.5.  Poor game from him, poor captaincy when he threw his arms up and chastised Shodipo early doors. Thought he looked petulant against Hartlepool and same last night.

Shodipo. 6  Put a couple of decent crosses in the first half and played more like a left back second half when they came strong and I thought he did well then.

Kamberi  4  Tried hard but nothing came off, very poor ball control. Don't know why he ran round the through ball from Fizz.

Gregory 5.   Better at holding the ball up than Kamberi but not a good performance.

Peacock-Farrell - 8 - Man of the Match - Apart from a couple of shaky moments from crosses, in particular the dolly he dropped on the goal-line in the 1st half, he was brilliant. The difference between a defeat and a point. Couple of excellent saves, and took a couple of good catches to relieve pressure late on.

Paterson - 7 - After an indifferent start, and a needless booking, which means a suspension, I thought he looked comfortable and did a fine job in the makeshift role.

Palmer - 8 - Very close to Man of the Match for me, and defensively he was very good, even under periods of pressure. Misses out on the MotM, because as well as been our best defender, he was also Pompey's...he's got to score one of those goalline opportunities!

Johnson - 7 - Got caught in possession a couple of times, but like the entire back three, did a great job, all things considered. Was a good threat going forward at times in the 1st half also.

Hunt - 7 - He was our best outfield player in the 1st half, in my opinion, and in the 2nd half, battened down the hatches and defended very well.

Shodipo - 6 - Worked hard, put a shift in, but I'm not convinced were going to get a tune out of him at wing back. Technically looks very raw, and defensively, everything seems really unnatural to him (which it probably is!)

Luongo - 6 - Would've been a 7, but for a stupid tackle, which we'll suffer for over the next three games. Before that, showed his class once again, and broke so much stuff up, and instigated so much of our attacking play. He's going to be sorely missed.

Bannan - 6 - Like the entire team, put a shift in, but didn't think he had a greatest game. Couple of brilliant deliveries in the 1st half, but after that, they were utterly dire.

Dele-Bashiru - 7 - Another strong performance. Drove forward well, was unlucky with the effort in the 1st half. Did his defensive duties well. Good, solid midfield performance in a scrappy game.

Gregory - 6 - Ran the lines tirelessly, up against the tide for the majority. Didn't have too much to feed off.

Kamberi - 6 - Like Gregory, defended well from the front, but little else. Couple of key headers in our own box at times also.

Wing - 6 - Came on when we sacrificed the win to ensure we got a point. Did his job.

Berahino - N/A - Not on long enough for a mark, but couple of good touches, and thought he looked better than of late (which tbf, isn't hard!)

Overall...

Great point. Probably would've taken a point at 5pm yesterday. Would've snatched your hand off for a point at 7.30pm, after seeing the sides and not a centre half in sight. And wouldn't have believed we'd have got a point, after Luongo's sending off.

Sometimes, we have to praise players doing the nitty gritty. Every single outfield player, Palmer excluded, could probably play "better" than last night, but as a man, they stuck together and ensured we kept a clean sheet, and got a good point (hence why nobody was given less than 6).

The worrying thing is, the constant injuries. It cannot be bad luck...something is seriously amiss...season after season. How, having five centre halves on our books, have we managed to have NONE available? And then, we compound the agony, with needless suspensions...Luongo missing til after Xmas, Paterson missing Crewe. You cannot be successful when you're constantly carrying this many absentees.

The frustrating thing about it all, is you just know it isn't going to end.

We weren't the force we have been but then we have all our centre-halves out injured (5 of them). Grateful to BPF but we were still in with a shout until Mass got sent off. Great battling at the end. Mass out for 3 games, is Gregory out too? How many players have we got left?

Bpf 9 mom..some outstanding saves and some great cross-gathering too. A bit lucky with his flap at the high ball off Hunt.

Palmer 8 he actually makes a very good centre-half despite his lack of height. Won his battles well and made some great blocks.

Paterson 8 Another battling performance.

Johnson 7 did remarkably well

Hunt 7 another good game from him

Shodipo 6 a bit anonymous really, though Kamberi should have done better with his cross .

Luongo 6 in this blood and thunder game he was one of the few who used the ball well. A bit unlucky with the sending off. He clearly got the ball but his momentum carried him through their player who made the most of it.

Bannan 6.5 the game was too harum-scarum for him to have any impact. Some good corners amidst the rubbish ones (difficult in that wind).

Dele-bashiru - 7 as usual looked good on the ball and worked hard

kamberi - 5 worked hard but I don't remember him doing one good thing with the ball. Robbed Gregory of a goal when he got in the way of the cross from Shodipo

Gregory 7 did a much better job of keeping us up the pitch than Kamberi, but not much else. Hope he's OK

Wing 6 - covered a lot of ground in the time he was on

Berahino 6 - nothing to complain about or cheer about

Lastly, a word about the Owlstalk favourite George Hirst. Apart from his play-acting I thought he looked surprisingly good for someone who's been a failure at other clubs - probably their best player. Very intelligent use of the ball, good running, able to beat a man. Thank God he missed his chance though.

Of course it is  ! It's the difference between violent conduct and reckless tackle. Semantics really, the important point being Luongo did not have the intent to deliberately harm or injure.

Tackles are generally classified as either

Careless (free kick)

Reckless (yellow)

or Dangerous (red)

whether a player makes contact with the ball or not doesn’t change if it’s a dangerous tackle which Luongo’s clearly was.
