Who is the worst manager to manage SWFC?

Recommended Posts

I suppose it's about defining 'worst'.

Our most damaging manager was probably Wilson. Couldn't handle the talent, discarded them and relegated us.

Yorath was a nice bloke but we were absolutely dreadful under him.

Jos and Pulis were horrendous.

Despite the promotion I have never disliked a manager as much as Dave Jones. Horrible, arrogant throw piece.

A good manager leaves the club in a better position than they arrived at. Here's how Wednesday's post-war managers have fared:

+40 = Jack Charlton (24th in Div 3 to 6th in Div 2)

+20 = Harry Catterick (22nd in Div 1 to 2nd in Div 1)

+19 = Howard Wilkinson (6th in Div 2 to 7th in Div 1)

+17 = Paul Sturrock (14th in Div 3 to 21st in Div 2)

+12 = Trevor Francis (3rd in Div 2 to 13th in Div 1)

+10 = Stuart Gray (23rd in Div 2 to 13th in Div 2)

+9 = Gary Megson (12th in Div 3 to 3rd in Div 3)

+4 = Steve Bruce (16th in Div 2 to 12th in Div 2)

+1 = Peter Shreeves (24th in Div 2 to 23rd in Div 2)

+1 = Terry Yorath (23rd in Div 2 to 22nd in Div 2)

-5* = Ron Atkinson I (18th in Div 1 to 3rd in Div 2)

-5 = Vic Buckingham (2nd in Div 1 to 7th in Div 1)

-6 = Brian Laws (16th in Div 2 to 22nd in Div 2)

I don’t know where you’ve taken those transfer fees from but taking a look at transfer market, Wilson signed…

Gerald Sibon - £3m

Giles De Bilde - £4.5m

Wim Jonk (who’d recently played for Holland in a World Cup semi final) - £2.52m

That’s an outlay of £10m on 3 players. At the back end of the 90’s that was a lot of money and considering what he spent in comparison to his predecessor Ron Atkinson I’d say that was being “heavily backed”.

Regardless, it was certainly enough you’d think for us to finish above Bradford City and stay up in the 99/00 season.

There will have been others (I can’t really be bothered to check) but off the top of my head another managerial gaff from him was the ridiculous swap deal he pulled off with Jim Magilton and Danny Sonner.

Some moments of decent football from that team. Sonner sending off in this game certainly didn't help when 3-2 up

Too many managers to mention. Some were hindered by genuine circumstances particularly financial, some were just sh!t.

The latter days of Francis set us on the path we are now on. Replacing good quality players with sh!te. Pleat and Wilson continued the trend until we eventually did what were threatening to do for years and get relegated from the prem.

Every manager since has struggled to cope with the fallout of that relegation perhaps with the exception of Carlos. Since him managers have struggled to cope with the failed gamble under Chansiri to get back to the prem hence why we now are where we are?

It's an interesting analysis, but a bit simplistic because it takes no account of the wider state of the club, the squad they inherited or the length of their employment.

Brian Laws, for example, is -6, but managed the club during some of it's darkest most difficult times. If he'd left after his first or second season his balance would have been positive.

Terry Yorath is +1, but 23rd to 22nd is hardly a ringing endorsement.

+12 = Trevor Francis (3rd in Div 2 to 13th in Div 1)

Is that correct?

When did he get us promoted to the top division?
