What’s been your maddest ever away trip?

Burnley away, last match of the season, already relegated, won 7-2..people with shoes off..Ashley Westwood, Steven Haslam and Richard Wood scoring

Internet tells me Richard Evand and Allan Quinn both scored 30 yarders.

I can't even remember Quinn's goal but the Evans "30 yarder" was actually a cross that flew straight in.

It was more surreal that Steven Haslam actually scored a goal, but iirc it was a block tackle that ended up in the net

great “surreal” day, just shading the Blackpool away night with the same crew that ended up with our picture in the news of the world due to some ladies selling sleaze on Ashley’s chipolatta 😳

Blackpool 2004, night match early in the promotion season before Sturrock came in? Think we win 2-1 with Bullen scoring his first goal for us.

I was there and was convinced I'd seen Ashley from Coronation Street at the match with Tommy Craig (seen Tommy at away games loads of times), so thanks for confirming that it definitely was him - I don't remember you though! Or Ashley's chipolata.

i was definitely mad one away game.

Back in the early 2000's, we were due to play Gillingham away in the FA cup,  I was living in Manchester, I had been sent by work to Glasgow for the week. I got back into Manchester Piccadilly at 5pm on the Friday, after travelling most of the day on a slow train due to snow. On arrival in Manchester I phone Gillingham F.C. to see if there was any chance of the match being called off, explaining to the bloke i spoke to, about my shitty journey so far. i was assured that the game would be on, so i dashed home. picked up some clean clobber, dashed back to Piccadilly to get the train back to Sheffield, after another delayed journey, due to the weather I got to my parents home about 10pm.

Got up Saturday morning and walked down Halifax Road to catch the Intercity owl to the game. We got all the way down to the last services on the M1, where we stopped for a break, 30 minutes later when we got back on the coach, we were told the game had been postponed. I was ******** livid!

We had a similar experience in the early 90's.  Playing Southampton away, our coach was setting off early to get down to Southampton to as close as opening time as possible.  We eventually arrived on the outskirts of Southampton at about 11.30/11.45am and walked into the nearest pub to settle down to a few hours pre-match drinking.  A couple of the lads were wearing Wednesday shirts, and as we walked into the pub the landlord and the handful of locals who were already in there looked at us non-plussed.

'You lot Wednesday fans?' enquires the landlord.

Trying not to be too sarcastic, we replied to the affirmative!!.  '

'Didn't you know the game had been postponed?'

Cue most of us bursting out laughing, thinking the landlord was trying to have a little joke with us.

Over the next minute or so in conversation with said landlord, it became quite clear that he wasn't joking and the game had indeed been postponed due to torrential rainfall in the Southampton area over the previous 36/48 hours!!.

That was a long journey back to Swinton!!

Millwall away 2006(?) when Bullen ended up in goal and Simek scored that controversial goal. Millwall fans went mental at that goal (with good reason in all fairness) and were throwing all sorts of things onto the pitch.

We were held back for ages after the match in the away "cage" until all Millwall fans had been moved on then had a police escort on the train to London Bridge. Police had a chain of officers to ensure everyone got to Kings Cross... problem is I live in London so had to break through the barricade or I'd have ended up in Sheffield!

It most certainly was!

And we had a few classics, Wrexham, Bradford, Leeds, Plymouth etc. come to mind. Bournemouth was a shocker though, although we can laugh at it now.

The Van!

The abandoned 'Walsall' game.

The Mini over into the Midlands. 5 in a mini.

Policeman: 'Carry on lads but keep the windows open or you'll die. Best thing to do when you get back is take it to the nearest cliff and push it off'

Bert/Sam/Betsy the Escort: Thick fog over the dales ...Sam jogging in front to show us the way. It would have been a very long way down if you hadn't sensed summat! lol

Grimsby: 'Black Ice'

Lincoln: 24 players on the pitch due to alcohol. Lying nasty plod.

Reading Away: We won!!! To the people of Reading we thank you for the tea and biscuits

Oldham/Huddersfield away: The Snake/The 'Stainrod Incident': RIP Les ... but what days!!!

All those van trips from the coach were memorable,  jenks falling out of stand at Mansfield and landing at side of a big copper, Scholey falling out of back of van at Wrexham all had a tale to tell.

Orient express coach from Norfolk arms at warren lane another

Wimbledon away in early 80s. Stayed in Finsbury Park at Holmes’S flat. Total anarchy that weekend.

must be many more

great days my old mate

I was at that game because I was at uni in Southampton and regularly went to Fratton Park with my Pompey-supporting mate. A few of our other uni mates came along too, but they all sat with him in the home end.

I got soaked on the roofless away end, and we lost 2-1 (Owen Morrison pulled one back for us). Witnessed the collector's item of Des Walker having a pop from distance.

I went to that one too. Not long after that they put a roof over the stand.

Swindon Town (meeting Phil King and getting free breakfast), Burnley (for the 7-2, some of which are the worst goals I've seen keepers concede) but Dundee is the maddest. Travelling all that way and getting locked of our room at the hotel by a mate, so two of us had to stop of the restaurant floor.

Donny away in 2014, Lost 1-0, freezing cold and wet through as we'd been on the front row. After the match about a dozen of us followed what we assumed was a police escort back into the town centre until they suddenly left us with a friendly "surprised you lads have come this way" and we realised we'd just been following a random group of coppers about a mile in the wrong direction. Long walk back to the centre from that and dived in a random s-hole of a pub just to warm up, shivering away with half a carling. 🥶
