FA cup first round

Corinthian Casuals have a fascinating history, having been founded in 1882 with the express purpose of boosting the England international side by providing a pool of players who played regularly together, thus counteracting the advantage of Scotland, most of whose players came from Queen's Park.  The Scots had won about six times in a row.  The scheme worked, because a total of 86 Corinthians represented England at full international level and on two occasions the national squad consisted entirely of Corinthian players.  Touring as the 'world's best side', they inspired Real Madrid to play in white so as to look like them, and inspired the founding of Corinthians of Brazil.

Or there's Notts County who were the oldest club in the League until their relegation from it let the title pass to neigbours Forest and the Owls.  (We don't take Stoke seriously, do we?  Anyway, they were liquidated and reformed in the early 20th century).
