Few mentions in dispatches must go to Peacock-Farrell, much improved performance! Number of key saves. Palmer was very good, big improvement after his last game, Hutchinson very good in the holding role, balls of steel that guy.

 

Couple of disappointments being Johnson and Wing, Wing especially showed a lack of composure over and over and over during the match, so many times he had the ball in space and gave it away with very poor passing, thought that was supposed to be his forte? The sooner Byers is back fit the better IMO. To his credit Wing battled throughout so deserves credit for that of course.

Johnson 6 they targetted him and got alot of corners but stood up quite well until stupid pen put us up against it, lacks pace for lb (or winger) so wigan got their reward in the end albeit too late, brown might offer more

Hutch 6 ok prefer at cb, not the legs for cm anymore and injured again.

Wing 6 decent defensively but we struggled for possession at times and gave it away too much

Adeniran 6 like brown covered alot of ground

Pato 9* game changing him playing central/no10, stopped us playing from back (crucial with dunkley cb), bpf had an outball and unlike gregory has presence and can finish, was everywhere, looked sharp, full of energy and even showed a bit of pace. Had 2 near miss goal of season attempts before a fantastic finish on his weaker foot, great team play, nuisance, very underatted IF played in that role and given some service

Brown 6 very energetic without much quality, his pace at lb and windass on left could be a good combo tho

Gregory 6 good assist but missed another sitter and likely wont score enough, maybe try sb central at some point

Possibly 1st time looked like a good team, high energy, positive performance, tweaked formation a compact 4231 with pato central worked a treat.

Still improvements to be made as bpf kept us in it, we conceeded many corners/crosses and we struggled for possession at times but very encouraging display to build on, everyone gave 100%

Redemption night for Peacock-Farrell... that crucial save after going 1-0 up, going up boxing bravely on another occasion and also the block on the 1-on-1 when Wigan cut straight through our defense... can't be faulted for the penalty.

But great team win, so many players that deserve a mention, including Paterson, Dunkley and Gregory too.

Peacock-Farrell - 8 - Responded superbly to the Ipswich gaff, and a general poor run of form. Made two keys saves at crucial times.

 

Palmer - 7 - Provided a good source of athleticism down the right hand side, and defended very well against McClean. However, his distribution is so, so, so poor. Infuriating the number of times he just aimlessly hoofed the ball down the line straight to gift Wigan possession.

 

Iorfa - 8 - At times, Wyke seemed to have the measure of him physically, however, as the game went on, the stronger he got. Couple of occasions his pace covered superbly after mistakes by Palmer & Dunkley. His calmness was crucial in the last 15 minutes.

 

Dunkley - 7 - When it comes to heading it, kicking it and defending crosses, he's very comfortable. However, too often his lack of mobility makes him a liability. Couple of occasions last night, a lack of concentration or a rash decision left us exposed.

 

Johnson - 7 - Thought he was very good down the left hand side, and he and Brown dealt with a real threatening Wigan right hand side. A brainfart moment to give away with penalty, which he needs to eradicate from his game, but we look a lot more balanced side with him (a natural left footer) at left back. 

 

Wing - 6 - He grew into the game, but he was exceptionally poor in the 1st half. Just seemed to constantly give the ball away, or punt it out of play. He improved in the 2nd half, and actually got to grips with the game, but I'm starting to question Moore's usage of him. He's a energetic, box-to-box midfielder, who's been asked to sit deep, and he looks uncomfortable and incapable of playing the role. Genuinely thought we'd signed one of the league's top performers, but at the minute, he just isn't performing consistently enough.

 

Hutchinson - 6 - Similar to Wing tbh... thought he looked off the pace in the 1st half. Seemed to constantly get dragged out of position. At one point, I was wondering whether Moore had deployed him as a number 10! 2nd half however, he obviously had a word with himself, and began to play his normal game, and allowed Wing to play a bit further forward....and incredibly, we actually began to compete in midfield. Moore needs to start playing round pegs in round holes.

 

Adeniran - 6 - Did a job. Showed some moment of real quality, and I think he's a genuine all round midfielder. He's got all the attributes...but, he's wasted playing on the right hand side. Yes, he can do a job...but are we getting the best of him out there?!

 

Brown - 6 - Felt a tad sorry for him last night. Looked to go at Power, but got absolutely nothing from the referee despite a fair old kicking. Another case of somebody doing a job, doing it alright...but are we getting the best out of him?!

 

Paterson - 8 - Caused Wigan issues by drifting around, and physically unsettles defenders. He, and Gregory, are a pretty formidable partnership on paper...they batter defenders, but also are happy running channels to stretch play. Took his goal superbly, and was unlucky not to score with an inventive effort a few minutes previously to the goal. 

 

Gregory - 8 - Man of the Match - He just shades MotM, because I thought he was the best player in a pink shirt by a long way at half time, and he maintained that standard in the 2nd half. Always seemed to be involved in any attacking play we had, his work-rate and quality made the 2nd goal, was really unfortunate not to score with the effort that hit the bar, and should've put the game to bed with the chance immediately after Wigan's penalty. But, make no mistake about it, he's a serious player at this level. 

 

Overall...

 

It was a better result, than performance. And although the 2nd half performance was much, much improved...it's a game that leaves me with more questions than answers.

 

Why is Moore obsessed with playing players out of position? Last night, we had a centre half in a centre midfield, an attacking midfielder playing the anchor role, a left back playing left wing, and a central midfielder playing right wing. Is it any wonder, in the 1st half, we created bugger all again?! The shift to move Hutchinson back into the anchor role, helped things in the 2nd half, and as a result, Wing & Hutchinson turned poor first halfs into decent performances.

 

We still lack any sort of fluency in an attacking sense, but one major positive from last night, was the player's will to win. Wigan were physical, we got nothing from the referee, and we were put under periods of pressure...but we stood up, and put out bodies on the line. In isolation, this was a great away performance...my worry is the trends...it's another game where we've looked stretched, out of shape at times, and have lack precision and sharpness when in possession. 

 

Let's hope it's a result that can inspire some confidence into the team...but, going forward, Moore is going to have to find a way to play round pegs in round holes. That's the only way we'll start to fulfil our potential this season.

Wing 7 Thought he was a stylish passer who lacked energy but today he battled and chased like a terrier but was slack with his passing!

Adeniran 7 Those who say he's not a wide player need to look at the bigger picture. Our midfield has looked best with him playing wide - with a midfielder there instead of a winger it gives us more bodies in the middle. Made a big difference.

Brown 6 His pace and running played a part in our new high-tempo style but on the ball he was dreadful. Have we got anyone who can do so much running AND keep possession?

Paterson 9 MoM Amazing performance. A bit like Luongo v Rotherham - the return of the forgotten man. High energy, power and no mean amount of quality too. Finding someone like this to support Gregory has been what we've been missing. Onwards and upwards.

Gregory 7 Battled well as ever. The one that hit the bar was desperately unlucky. The one he shot at the keeper was desperately poor. Played a big part in the way we unsettled them. Not sure how he managed to bump their CH out of the way without giving away a foul (he later did this again to win a corner) but set up the goal superbly.

This is what does my head in.

 

He brought Brown a left back in but plays him as a winger. Johnson a winger playing left back, he's never been a left back. Also continually played Palmer at left back, which doesn't work.

 

Plays Adeniran out wide when is best position is central. Prior to last night he's also played Paterson wide, where he can't affect the game.

We have plenty of quick wide players to do that job.

 

Just play players in their best position!

Peacock-Farrell - 8 - Great response after the Ipswich game, made keys saves when required at crucial times, person of true courage.

Palmer - 6.5 - Probably his best game of the season defended well against McClean but a lot of this was down to the help he got from Adenarin.  His distribution is so poor and it was annoying how he just aimlessly hoofed the ball down the line to give Wigan possession straight back. He was probably lumping it to Adenarin but he was back assisting him so was strange.

Iorfa - 8 - Wyke got away with a lot of physical stuff which was border line fouling but the ref let him get away with it, as the game went on he adjusted to this and got the better of Wyke. On more than one occasion his pace covered up mistakes by others. His leadership was so crucial in the last 15 minutes keeping others calm when we were under the cosh a bit

Dunkley - 7 - Defended the many corners and crosses well, when you think he is still coming back from a serious injury I think he is doing great and there is more to come. He is not in the Iorfa class for speed but is a good steady no frills defender. Can lose concentration at times but I feel this will get better with time.

Johnson - 7 - Thought he was very good down the left hand side with Brown and dealt quite well with a real threatening Wigan right hand side attack. Lack of left back experience meant he got caught wrong side of their player for the penalty which hopefully he will learn from quickly, but we look a more balanced side with a natural left footer at left back. I feel that with these two and Gibson when fit we have good coverage on the left.

Wing - 7 –Seemed poor in the first half but was under pressure all the time being harried by two and sometimes three Wigan players. He improved in the second half when Hutch stayed more defensive and we started getting on top of the midfield.  He's an energetic midfielder and seemed to get better as the game went on

Hutchinson – 7- Thought he looked out of position for the first half an hour too far forward and getting in the way of our attacking play. He then dropped back into his more normal role and began to play better and this allowed Wing to play a bit further forward. We then actually began to compete in midfield and our attacking play improved due to this.

Adenarin - 7 - Did a good job and has real quality, and I think he's the all-round midfielder we have been missing. He's got all the skill and athleticism and is disciplined as well. He is definitely better centre-mid but did the job asked of him very well which was to stifle their left side mid-field/attack.

Brown - 7 - Every time he got the ball either before he got going or during a run he was fouled and the ref did very little to protect him and so all the moves on his side broke down. Despite a good kicking, some of it hefty he kept trying throughout the game so he is another who will only get better with more game time.

Paterson - 8.5- Joint Man of the Match-Caused Wigan issues by drifting around, and physically unsettles defenders. Him, and Gregory, are a pretty formidable partnership they batter defenders, but also are happy running the channels to stretch play. Took his goal superbly, and was unlucky not to score with an inventive effort a few minutes previously to the goal. Stole from someone else but why re-invent the wheel as my sentiments also.

Gregory - 8.5- Joint Man of the Match - Thought him and Paterson were the pick of the player’s first half and maintained that standard in the second half. Always seemed to be involved in any attacking play and his work-rate and quality were a joy to see. He was really unfortunate not to score with the shot that hit the bar. He could've put the game to bed with the chance immediately after Wigan's penalty but as we won can be forgiven. In my opinion he will be a big player for us this season with the right partner.

It was a great result against the top of the league that was on a long run of wins and full of confidence. We matched them for most of the match and we got better as the game went on. After some of the results lately including the last minute goal on Saturday the lads manned up and a big well done from me.

The gaffer was technically astute last night against the form team of the division and even though they had some chances all teams of their quality do. Playing Adenarin out wide to assist keeping their usually best attacking side quite meant they had little joy there. We had to play our centre half as a centre midfielder because of this and injuries and an attacking midfielder playing the anchor role. This took most of the first half to sort out and the shift to move Hutchinson back into the anchor role worked a treat in the second half. Wing & Hutchinson turned a frustrating first half into much better second half performances. I think like most that we know Hutch can be a little undisciplined or overzealous at times and with his will to win was maybe playing too far forward trying to create something. If all week in training Hutch stops back and everyone knows their role seeing him out of position probably confuses them all.

We at times required more fluency in attack but a lot of this was down to the way Wigan set up as spoilers by any means fair or foul. The big positive from last night was the player's all kept going even against intimidating tactics as Wigan were physical and we got no protection. We had periods of pressure and came out with the win which has not really been the case prior to this match so that’s good going forward.  Let's hope it's the result that inspires our players now they know they can do it onwards and upwards.

My ratings are:

 

Peacock-Farrell: 8.5 - This was exactly why I said he should keep his place over Wildsmith. A couple of brilliant saves in and amongst.

Palmer: 6.5 - Didn't seem to get forward much, but dug in.

Dunkley: 8 - His kind of game. Lots of heading and clearing.

Iorfa: 7.5 - Back to from.

Johnson: 7 - Was just thinking what a good game he was having when he gave away that stupid penalty.

Adeniran: 7 - Battled away, think he's out signing of the season so far.

Wing: 7 - As usual, lots of good stuff and random moments of weird stuff, like long raking passes to no-one. Still becoming one of my favourite players, don't know why.

Hutchinson: 7 - Battled away with a limp for most of the match like a footballing Gordon Greenidge.

Brown: 6 - Love his energy and work rate. But when he gets the ball, doesn't seem to know what to do with it

Paterson: 9 - MoM. Great day for the drunk uncle. He was everywhere. He's so much better as a 10 than Bannan and caused them all kinds of problems, then that cracking goal. 

Gregory: 7.5 - He was a real pest for a lot of the game and managed to get away with a couple of sneaky fouls. Shame he didn't score the easy chance. Fingertip save denied him with the other one off the bar.

 

Hunt: Too short a time to give a score, but he didn't do very well.

Shodipo: Good guy to have on the bench.
