I'd chuck in Goldfinger too.

But I agree, I think there have only been a handful of truly great Bond films.

It is a shame that the early promise of Casino Royale was never really fulfilled. For me, it's the best Bond film and one of the great action films of the 2000s.

Unfortunately, with sequels, there comes the inevitable go bigger and bolder, open up the universe more and I think that often sees diminishing returns.

What made Casino Royale quite special is it was very grounded and a real back to basics effort. It's not like any of the Craig films went completely ridiculous like what befell poor Brosnan or what was pretty much standard during the Moore era, but I never felt they truly recaptured the grittiness of Royale. Just a really tight, very well put together film.

Kinda reminds of Batman Begins, which I still think is the best of the Nolan trilogy.

Agree re the batman films

arguably same for mission impossible films. First one almost film noir. Quite an arty movie with odd plot . After that, just ludicrous.

Casino royale is Craig’s legacy as bond, suspect in 40 years will still be remembered as one of the top 3 . OHMSS and royale both have a new actor in role, quite faithful to the books and a more human bond at their heart.  To me the two stand head and shoulders over the other films albeit I think dr no is a great film as well, but none of the Connery scripts match royale or OHMSS

I went to see this last night and absolutely loved it. The villain was a bit underwhelming. So much film and so little about him.

I really enjoyed the Daniel Craig era. It really brought the films into the modern era and quite sad to see them end.

Ditto. Screen 4 Meadowhall Vue at 4:15.

Enjoyed it a lot. The length of the film isn't an issue, as there's a proper story, and continual action. The vehicle stunts are very impressive.

Also enjoyed Craig's tenure as 007 (00 what?)

Whoever wrote NTTD was very prophetic too, in the new world of Covid. A manufactured disease, that could spread worldwide, for economic gain...........?

A bit far fetched.......

🤔

Perhaps it would have been tighter if they had never got the rights to SPECTRE/Blofeld back half way through and therefore just stuck to the one ill-defined nefarious criminal organisation.

I never really could get on board with this version of Spectre or Blofeld.

Everyone loves Waltz as an actor, but I think he sort of lost me once he said cuckoo tbh. The whole him and Bond being brothers (sort of) is a bit meh. Head of a vast criminal empire and the main priority is now to screw over your sibling?

Shame actually, as that dining hall scene in Spectre looks great and you have big Dave Bautista walking in to do classic Bond henchmen stuff...and then the spotlight goes on Bond and we get "cuckoo."

Probably just one too many missteps during the course of these 5 films, but Craig, Casino Royale and bits of Skyfall and No Time to Die make it probably the second best Bond run behind Connery.

As for what next - maybe back to the beginning, when Bond was recruited as a 00, not sure that’s ever featured in a film. Sort of a prequel…

Spoiler

Not sure I can get on board with that.  Doing prequels with a character where you know their ultimate demise takes away any suspense or tension

I don’t know how they move this forward now

Perhaps they cloned him 😀

Seriously.

The only thing all these films have in common with each other is the character of James Bond.  Different actors have put a different emphasis on different aspects of that character, but it remains essentially the same.

Change it too much and it's not really a Bond film.

The trouble is that James Bond is a bit... tricky in 2021.  He's a historical artifact taken out of its original context.

The solution - make the next one a cool, fairly grounded  'From Russia With Love' style Cold War drama set in the 1960s.  Austin Powers was long enough ago that you could get away with that now.

Saw it last night.

5/10

The new 007 was poor and I didn’t believe them as a character.

It all felt a little too forced and cliche. The action scenes were poor

The main bad guy wasn’t ‘bad enough’ for me. Another below par character. And don’t get me started on the tussle scene at the end, how poorly choreographed was that?

Felt really let down considering all the rave reviews

And they bloody killed him at the end! I know it’s the last bond film for Daniel Craig, but did they have to kill him off

You can’t except to open this thread on a new film and not see spoilers lol although if mods want to wrap my post in a spoiler text that’s fine. I have no idea how to do it

🙂 it's okay, I was only joking.

Was planning on seeing it, but it doesn't sound great.
