should really have done what the prem clubs do in this situation, and get the player to sign an option of a 1 year extension on the clubs side. Seems we've not bothered again, leaving a potential cash asset to leave on a free or minimal fee based on him coming through the youth setup.

...just scored the winner (probably) with a rocket free kick for Grimsby.  Had a good game by all accounts.  💙

Does that make Hunt the only Wednesday player this season to have scored from a free kick?

We hope we learn with youth player, each season we show we have not learnt, Brennan, Galvin, Hunt, Waldock, Hagan all free agents next June. All should at the very least be under contract to 2023. In the scheme of things, they will cost us less than we are paying Luongo to never play a game.

I know we exercised the one year option we had.Did they offer a brand new one as well then?

So i understand. Hunt refused it, was desperate to go and disenchanted.

Things have moved on a lot since then though and surely if Josh and Dom have been talked into it Alex will be too. TOtally different feel to place from this summer.

Than again, his chances of first team football here seem to be lower than ever.

I don’t see it like that.. you can’t always have all of your academy players on contracts that are minimum 2 years away from expiring on the off chance they’d make it. The likelihood is that most of those won’t make it here as they’re already 21 and nowhere near breaking through.. our focus should be on the 16-18 year olds we have who look promising.

If they were all under contract until 2023 we wouldn’t be able to get rid of them if we wanted to. If they do really well and we want to keep them, they will probably stay as long as we make fair offers on new contracts to them financially.. which crucially is what we didn’t do with Shaw or Urgohide.

The odds of Hunt playing at Conference level or Galvin playing even lower than that showing enough that some other club higher up than Wednesday want to blow us out of the water financially to take them off us is pretty small.

We should just make the offers at the point where we know we want to keep them here.. and if not, no harm done just let the contract expire.

Exactly this.  Had Hunt been in our first team this season then we should have being offering him a new deal. But as he is not then there is no rush to tie him down to a deal. A goal in non league football isn't all of a sudden going to make him into hot property is it. And as you have said at his age chances are we will be letting him go anyway in the summer. As like with Shaw and Urhoghide there wages demands start to become a little to silly for there actual current ability. And we aren't in a position like a Celtic to offer 3-5k to players that will hardly kick a ball.

I believe that if we have offered a contract that is at least as good as the current one, we are entitled to a compensation fee for a player under 24 that goes elsewhere. So it's worth offering the contract unless  we really see no future for them here. TBH if a player can't standout at the places where we have sent our loan players, they are hardly likely to make it here.
