Toney, for example, was wanted by Celtic and was reportedly attracted by the prospect before his head overruled his heart and he chose Brentford.

 

As for Berahino, he went on loan to Bees as an 18 y.o. in February 2012 when they were in Lge One. This was meant to be for the rest of the season. But although mhe scored 4 goals in 8 games, his loan was suddenly cut short and he was sent back to WBA less than 2 months later, ostensibly for "personal reasons".

 

However "personality reasons" would have been nearer the mark, since from the moment he entered Griffin Park, he was giving it the full "Charlie Big testicles" 24/7. Possibly the highlight of his time at the club was when he missed a couple of chances which cost them a result, but was laughing and joking about it in the dressing room afterwards, until an old pro pinned him  to the wall by the throat and reminded him that while it meant nothing to him (Berahino), the lost win bonus would cost him (teammate) that month's mortgage repayment.

Of all the people in the world who know about Berahino’s personality it’s Darren Moore.  So it’s time to put trust in his judgement, I’m sure Berahino will be missing from matchday squads soon enough if he tries to be a billy big b*locks here

We got Berahino on a free according to The Athletic, and signed Byers on a free with a sell-on clause agreed, according to The Yorkshire Post.

Er, I didn't say that he needed the win bonus to pay his mortgage, just that it would have.

 

The point being that it meant something to his new teammates, even if Berahino thought himself above such lowly considerations.

I think it’s a classic Wednesday signing, however Moore was able to get something out of him once and is best positioned to be able to do so again.

 

He should also do well at this level - lower than what he will have been used to.  If Moore succeeds it could work out very for all concerned.

When all we can sign is freebies self imposed or efl imposed it seriously restricts your levels of who you can get? Said before don’t think it’ll work out re his past history ( might be ok to start with then slide) but I’ll give him a clean slate cus he now plays for us and as the ability to rip the league so go on kid prove most of us wrong and fire us up

If what The Athletic have been reporting is accurate, then Green was told he could leave a couple of weeks before he went, and the Berahino deal all happened within ten days.

This is highly likely to end in failure to be honest. I suspect he will play a bit part, not really make an impact other than 1 or 2 goals and drift off into oblivion.

 

If it did work out and he fires us to promotion then DM is a genius.

 

I don't think its too much of a risk but he's probably a busted flush. Hope im wrong

Winnall was a similar kind of signing to some of these, he was 25 and had a decent record. We've also tried many times to scoop up these lower league strikers like Barry Corr, David Graham, Grant Holt - or similar overseas-style bargain players like Nuhiu, Di Piedi, Bus. Young and hungry, to coin a phrase.

 

Problem is, 99-times-out-of-100 when you sign a £100k striker, what you are left with is a £100k striker. You can point to the 1-in-100 example of a £100k striker suddenly turns themselves into a £10m striker but it is very rare that actually happens. The 3 examples given so far include 2 strikers who cost £1.8m / £600k, which is out of our financial price range at the moment.

For me it all comes down to a more defined recruitment criteria and how you identify or source a player to give them a chance of success.

If you analise the hell out of a player the risk should in theory be reduced, then you factor in the playing style, like a dna and if they match then thats surely a better mode of recruitment, than, well he worked with him years ago back when he WAS successfull, thats just lazy recruitment and is packed with risk for both parties.

I hope it works and the kid bags hatloads of goals Il toast his name every saturday night if he does, but I reckon we could have done better, and for the same amount cash wise, had we been a bit more savvy when we were searching.
