That was the day they threw the TV off the flats onto the escort on the way to the ground - the daft Geordies...

Derby 89/90 - full on riot - SYP mounted police charging our fans outside.

WBA - after our late show - their fans on the bus back to Handsworth

Preston 91/92 cup match outside the ground, essentially their fans charging up the street outside smacking anyone walking down

It's odd how your mind remembers things. I was in that escort going through the centre of Newcastle to the ground. You remember a tv being thrown off some flats, someone else mentioned a wooden crate being chucked off a very high building onto us. I remember it being a full size park bench from what was 5 or 6 stories high, and it landing on some Wednesday fans in front of us. Actually it was probably all three and more.

The local coppers walking alongside us let the locals run into us, chuck glasses and marbles by the handfull.

The coppers just laughed at us and one said "Aye , yer gunna get done sooner or later today".

The train windows got put through on the way home, brick landed on the table we were sat at. The kids throwing the bricks looked about 9 years old. The train stopped at York so the two lads sat by the window and others could go to hospital.

We won 1-0, Shelton overhead kick. Wonderful memories.

Really ?????............................memory must be playing tricks on me .  i thought the previous mid week draw at Rotherham had more or less sealed our fate ?

We finished one point behind Norwich. If we had won at Bolton, we’d have gone up. A draw wasn’t good enough because our goal difference was worse.

Nice to know so many of us survived that trip!

So either three of us are all wrong about what the Geordies threw off a building onto us or they did actually chuck the lot - a crate, a tv, a park bench and an industrial cable spool. Probably the latter.

Anyone remember a kitchen sink?

I remember getting 'escorted' to the ground and being told by the coppers 'get ready to run when you get round this corner'.

I didn't go myself but that's exactly what my mate said it was.

Newcastle was also pretty hairy in the 88-89 season when we beat them 3-1 with that Hirst wonder strike.  The coppers weren't too bothered about our safety that day either!

West Ham away also mid to late 80s when we only took a few hundred and they ran into us at the end of the game.

Villa away 86-87 when they got relegated and they ran into us after the game.

Wolves in the FA Cup 89-90 having to walk back to the station solo and past the bridge boys waiting for us.

That season was the first one where it became 3 points for a win.

Had it still been 2 points for a win we'd have actually gone up. Typical Wednesday!

Was at that Bolton game. If memory serves me correctly there was a floodlight pylon in the middle of the terrace we were on. Somebody (I want to think it was Sammy) spent most of the game quite a way up it leading the chants.

That's exactly the sort of stunt Sammy would have done although normally someone put him up to it.

That Portsmouth away game that’s been mentioned a few times. After the game the police kept us in while (I think) they cleared the home fans away. My memory might be playing tricks but I’m sure the police took us round to the home end (which was covered). Anyone remember that? The train was so late back because a train in front had broken down so we had to wait for it to be moved.

Yep, that's exactly how I remember it too. The Police didn't want us on the station at the same time as the Pompey fans so they kept us behind for well over an hour. At least they had the decency to put us on the covered end.

By the time we got on the train we were already nearly two hours late and the train went about two miles down the line then stopped for a couple of hours!

What with further delays due to maintenance etc. it was almost 3pm by the time we got back to Sheffield Midland. The poor sods that got on at Dronfield couldn't even get back there due to Bradway tunnel being shut (the train went back from Chesterfield via the "Old Road" through Beighton and Darnall) and had to taxi back from there. Most of us got a 5 quid refund from the club IIRC.

Man City away September ‘79. League cup midweek game. Went on football special train - heavy police presence on arrival & escorted us to ground. Lost 2-1. After game police nowhere to be seen. Began walking back to station with mates when a group of lads caught up with us & walked alongside for a while - next thing gets a fist in the side of my head - we legged it & managed to find set coach park - cadged a lift back as by now had missed train. Got off lightly as another lad who got on coach was pouring with blood having been stabbed - messy but fortunately not life threatening. Good old days!!

Here are a few, Upton Park in our first season back up, didnt know whether to team up or stay in 1's and 2's and sneak by before the game, quite unsettling. After the game they turned up mob handed by the flats but in my opinion they came off second best as we had nowhere to go. After that they came at us on the coaches and it felt like they were coming out of every house, it was a little mental.

Geordies when Shelts scored, very tricky with things coming off the roof as others have mentioned. I remember we played them early the following season, we were outside just after kick off and I think it was pretty even numbers and they didnt want to know at all. I have never rated them after that.

Everton in the semi 86, it was mayhem most of the day, Wednesday all over the place and the first time I saw the hoolivan!

I also remember the Forest game, first game back, there was a lot of miners strike stuff at the time and just raised the atmosphere. I think that Ricky went in the lane end for some reason and I also remember him getting nicked during the game. Memory plays tricks on you but it was kicking off everywhere that day.

The “dambusters” game. We went in a minibus and parked near Old Trafford cricket ground. Me and me mate were one of the first out of the gate after the game and didn’t see a bit of trouble. Wasn’t till we got back home that we heard about what had gone off. Didn’t only so many Wednesday fans get out of the ground and then the coppers shut that big wooden gate leaving the ones who were outside exposed to a kicking?

Was at quite a lot of the games that have been mentioned on this thread. Chelsea away in the 80’s was always interesting. Coaches dropping off then having to run the gauntlet over that crossroads and then walk round the back of their stand to get to the away terrace.

Early to mid 90’s used to go on Croftys coach which was always a good laugh and some interesting nights out on the way back. We seemed to always end up in Bedford when we’d played down south. Those halcyon days when we were at Wembley every other week we used to park up in Stanmore, have a few beers then get on the tube to Neesden, drink there then back on the tube to Wembley. One of the games against Arsenal, Ricky was in our carriage and it kicked off with the Arsenal fans. Think we were all still at it going up Wembley way.

Funnily enough it’s the places you wouldn’t expect where I’ve seen some of the worst. Port Vale, Preston, Swansea (outside The Vetch) to name a few. Seem to think there was always trouble at Villa as well.

I always thought it was rugby or lough borough we used to end up stopping at. Mind you I'd probably had about a gallon n half by then so who knows.... Some reyt ale carts on that coach.

Newcastle in about 81/2 for an fa cup match (think we lost 3-1), kept being spat on and abuse thrown at us, they didn't matter if it was kids/oaps, remember one old woman getting a slap from an idiot. also the Shelton game in 83, we came out of the ground and about 9000 Wednesday fans turned left with the police escort, we had parked the other way up the road, there was about 30/40 of us strung out walking up the road. we went round the corner to see about 500 Newcastle fans attacking everything that moved, there were fans laid out all over the place covered in blood and anybody lucky to get back to there car had their windows put through, very scary for a young kid.

also remember trouble at Chester for an fa cup match which we drew 1-1, Grimsby (every time we go). I remember going on the underground on the way back from QPR (I think) and running in to Arsenal fans which kicked off big style.

not a scary day out but always remember playing at Peterborough in the 70s, we parked near to the train station to see 20/30 of their lads waiting for the ICO to pull in,  they soon legged it when a packed train emptied about 1,000 Wednesday fans on to the platform.

Sure it was a wooden crate, one of the lads it hit was off our estate. IIRC he was in hospital for a while.

Was only 15 at the time and at the time it was a mad day out kicking off all day. Got to admit as a young un those seasons seemed fun.

Late 60's went in Stretford end by mistake, wearing our colours too (pay on the gate at that time). Police ended up rescuing us and escorting us round the ground before we were killed.

Elland road again late 60's got attacked outside the ground, police stood watching.

Owls V Man City and Owls V Liverpool away fans on the Kop in big numbers, loads of trouble throughout the match.

Them were the days !
