Most intimidating match day experience you've had?

Millwall away, loads of Wednesday lads giving it the big one during the game and then hotfooting it straight onto the coaches outside the away end. The rest of us had the joy of the walk to the station…..

Also, City away at Maine Rd.

Horrible place.

Darts, coins, rocks etc coming over the fence.

I went to watch my nephew play for the Hull Stingrays under 18's against the Sheffield Steelers under 18's a few years ago and it was not the fans that we hostile but the players, they kept hitting wooden pucks into the crowd.

Man City away early 1990’s they were renovating the away end at Maine Road, we had a small section of the kippax. Got absolutely showered with coins and bottles of some yellow liquid etc. Exiting the ground wasn’t much fun either.

Sadly it was Wednesday fans who wanted to beat us up. Away at Dagenham, me and my brother holding our tickets trying to find a seat when a steward takes them from us and then kicks the people out of our seats. We say we don't want this and for the first half we are getting abuse from everyone around us. Some fat bloke leant over to call me a hippy and tell me he was going to beat me up at half time. Wednesday equalise at this point and at blames me for him missing the goal. At half time we spoke to the police and asked if we could go into the standing area just to the left of the goal. They said yes. We did ask the steward that at the start.

1973 at Marassi, Sampdoria v AC Milan, packed ground 1st game of that season, coins and bottles raining down on us from Milan fans, I got hit on the head by a bottle, was only 14 at the time, needed stitches for a cut, found out in hospital the score 3-2 to Sampdoria so was happy with that at least, but my dad never took me to another game in Italy again, but that 4-4 draw v Man utd in 74 was just as bad, specially when United fans tried to get the game called off

think we were away at Charlton. Met up with a bunch of mates at blackheath, near Charlton, place was absolutely packed even at 9am. Heard a load of shouting then a massive gunshot, started running full pelt as had no idea what was happening.

we ran right down the Heath, looked back and a massive group of blokes- I mean thousands - were chasing after us like lunatics.  People were also standing on the pavements screaming at us , we just ran and ran and ran. 
 

 Chased us all around london for next 2 hours, never stopped until we got to horse guards parade and finally they stopped . Randomly Steve cram was there and gave us a medal, always thought he was Sunderland not Charlton .

Went on the coach with the Darnall Owls and most of the windows got smashed as we left the ground. We had the last laugh though. Millwall fans in a mini were giving us abuse, then we pulled alongside them as the traffic stopped. One of the lads jumped through the coach window onto the roof of the mini and then bounced back into the coach, funny as ********. Cold journey back but worth the memories, Wednesday took about  12 coaches and most got bricked.The police escort diverted to deal with Millwall fans outside a pub, the coaches drove passed some flats where Millwall fans were waiting with the amo, they knew how to plan an ambush.

Can remember trying to get on the Fulwell end before the game. Around 100 managed it before the rest of us were charged by police on horseback. Those 100 were totally outnumbered and took a hammering. After the match whole hell was let loose with both mobs causing trouble. Our coaches were sitting ducks when they crossed that bridge near the city centre a lot of coach windows went through.

Playing a version of hide n seek around the back streets of Moss Side on a Tuesday night  (v Man City League cup 79)

Also making the ‘short walk’ from the Upton Park tube station to West Ham ground without a police escort  (and back) 1980

 

I agree, the Newcastle trip that day was a real eye opener (literally)

Chelsea away in the FA Cup in the 70s, was only about 13, took over 7000. Coach number 2 from Pond Street, got dropped off outside the ground and the driver told us the coaches would be parked near Battersea Power Station. It kicked off at the end of the game as the Chelsea fans were waiting outside. Finding the coaches was a nightmare, was glad when we did get to the coach, then as we left we got bricked and had to divert to get another coach for the journey back. I'm 60 now but got so many memories of near misses in the 70s and 80s.

Port Vale away and getting chased around Leek by Stoke fans. 

Going to Brighton away on the coach and not realising the drivers had to have a rest. So when we arrive and the coach driver shouts "back here for 10 o'clock" and it's a 3 o'clock kick off. Walking around Brighton as a teenager and there's fighting most of the night, luckily Wednesday took a good following and came out on top.

Think the Charlton Cup game when we took over the ground and the Millwall fans who entered our end just after kick off was the scariest for me. I was at the front as they came up and people scattered as one of them pulled out a knife, sure there was only a few of them but as always they feared no one.

I got stabbed twice that evening on Lloyd street.

There was others from Sheffield stabbed as well.

Still think Tranmere away on the Tuesday night after playing them on the Saturday was bad.

worse Wednesday away following I’ve seen only about 300 of us got attacked from all sides at final whistle.

Manchester United in the 90s. League Cup semi I think it was because they came back to Hillsborough a week or so later. It wasn't long after we'd played Kaiserslautern and we were singing the Dambusters tune. They took offence and went nuts.

 

After the match, I was walking away from the ground and saw Wednesday fans being dragged out of their cars and car windows being smashed. Never seen anything like it. I was terrified. I quickly hid my shirt and scarf under my jacket and tried to blend in with the crowd. Only time I've genuinely feared for my safety at a football match.

 

On the return, all the local pubs (I used to go in the Travellers) boarded their windows up, expecting reprisals.

I've always considered most football related violence to be a thing that only really affects the ones who go looking for it, however a few incidents:

 

Derby (A) - Old Baseball Ground, midweek game, police stopped all the Owls fans leaving by the most obvious exit (to where most had parked) and sent us all on a wild goose chase, trouble quickly followed.

 

Manchester United (A) - Cup game in the 90's (I think) the Owls used to the Dambusters tune with their arms aloft, the Manyoo fans took this as a Munich insult and many skirmishes arose after the game.

 

Sheffield United (A) - the 2-2 game when Megson was manager, they were 2-0 up we could have snatched it, vile mood after the game with some of the numpties throwing lit air bombs into crowds of people.
