Derby Struggling….

I find it amazing to think that he's still only 35. Blokes been finished as a player since he went to Everton at 31. There's players like Modric, Ronaldo, Ramos etc still playing at the very top at the same age or older. Zlatan is 39 - 4 years older and playing in Serie A.

England and Man Utds record goalscorer,  but many people will still think he never made the most of his ability due to a complete lack of discipline and refusal to look after himself physically.

It's Derby's business that they made him manager, but he's obviously massively out of his depth. It would come as no shock if he was sacked before the first game of the season.

Exactly the reason he will always go down as "underrated" and hardly on anyone's list of all time greatest Premier League players.

If he looked after his body, kept his fitness levels up he could still be a player at Man Utd - Maybe not a guaranteed starter, but like a Cavani figure. And in doing so would have scored many more PL goals.

Hard to say a waste of talent because he was far from that, but you get what i mean!

He'll also never make it as a manager. Lampard and Gerrard have a lot bit more about them in terms of professionalism, discipline etc. Rooney is simply just a simpleton.

Still think that if Rooney wasn't an ex England captain and leading scorer Derby would be in league 1 now after getting a big points deduction from the EFL.

Eh?

rooney doesn’t count for owt with the EFL.

Derby went for Rooney in the first place because they could offset half his wages vs FFP as he was a player-coach. They spent years signing well known names instead of potential or actual suitable players, Rooney is a culmination of all of that. Very much a who's who of Championship football although yet to have Jordan Rhodes play for them.

Looking forward to them going down to be honest.

cheers 👍

I agree with those posters who criticise his physique, lack of fitness and the lack of anything between his ears.

the difference between him and Frank could be measured in light years.

frank didn’t have a great record at signing players, and was guilty of over thinking the play off final but his man management and fan engagement was excellent. He understood players. Talked sense.

As for wazza….He’s a dog.

He’d sniff @rses if he could.

Rooney is just...well, he's just thick.

He was a brilliant player and probably the most exciting prospect this country has had since Gazza.

Could he have done more? Yeah, probably, but he came into the game at 16 built like a man several years his senior. Not defending him per se, but I'm not sure genetics were always in his favour, though he no doubt could have done more by hitting the gym a bit more and watching his diet.

Still - most players would kill to have even a fraction of the career that Wayne had.

Proper thicko though.

On the Rooney fitness debate above, he matured way before others. As a kid he was a monster, absolutely dominated from the young age groups as he had the physique of an adult male at 14. By the time he was 25 he was already declining physically and he was always going to struggle to keep the weight off completely as his genetic make up of his family isn't great. That being said he clearly had spells where he just didn't care.

He was probably at his best from age 17 to 25 whereas most players will hit their peak from about 22 to 30.

Best teenage player of the modern era by far.

Never kicked on. Said a few times, but at euro 2004 he was immense for us

Hard to think of a more exciting young talent at that time.

That hat trick against Fenerbache...what a player he was.

Yeah he just came out of no where too.

The likes of Grealish and Foden have been in and around their clubs starting 11 for years before really bursting into the scene.

Rooney scored a screamer against Arsenal and just carried on from there. Incredible natural ability.

Even Then, Foden is what 20? and Grealish is 26?

Rooney was 17 was it at the euros and was crazy. He was technically as good as ever, but back then when he had the explosiveness and power too, he was the best player I've ever seen in an England shirt. Shame he never reproduced it at another major tournament.

Very Interesting points made earlier about his genetics and maybe the fact that Rooney was a bit of a freak and his hormones mean his peak was actually 17-22 or so
