Lionel Messi

Wouldn't be shocked to see PSG sell Mbappe now if they have to balance the books (do they actually give a shit?). He's going into the last year of his contract and their most sellable asset.

Who else could they move? Maybe Icardi or Draxler? Nobody is going to want Di Maria.

But who could / would buy Mbappe? Transfer fee and wages would be astronomical and far beyond the reach of most of the usual suspects.

If you believe the rumours then Liverpool have already asked. They have the money and the pulling power.

Pretty sure that given his age and ability there would be a queue of teams who are willing to go all in to get him.

I don't doubt potential suitors - but surely nobody will match his PSG wages of apparently £400k p/w?

This signing feels like football is turning into the NBA, owners turning clubs to franchises. It’s such an underwhelming move for the average football fan, seeing Messi turn up in the french league

Agreed but it will be interesting if they can perform in Europe

Does the 'average football fan' give a throw who Lionel Messi signs for?

It's barely even the same sport these days.

Maybe for some, but my love is for football itself not the politics behind it. I’ll always love the game

He’s available for free next year

You write the only club that can afford him like he couldn’t possibly go anywhere else lol

Hes basically bankrupted Barca yet still not enough money

He didn't though did he!

Unless you think the players are the reason we got a points deduction rather than those who agreed their contracts.

Not to mention the hundreds of millions Barcelona's board wasted on transfers and wages of players who have not performed for them.

Agree, the French league is t0ss, PSG won league before he signed.

PSG didn't win the league last season. Ronaldo joined a team that win more domestically than PSG in the past decade.

Not really.

People going on about the money, particularly English fans for some reason, but they wouldn't bat an eyelid had he gone to say Chelsea or City.

Him, Ronaldo and so forth earn absurd amounts of money, but then they make their respective clubs absurd amounts of money too.

I don't like it, but that's what football at the elite level has become. Most top clubs are now Harlem Globetrotter franchises forking out crazy money for the superstars of the game.

I mean, I get intellectually that there are all these people in China and the USA who will suddenly switch their 'allegience' from Barcelona to PSG just because their favourite 'big name' has moved clubs, and will now buy a bunch of PSG merchandise and chuck all their Barcelona merchandise in the bin, and start planning their 'big vacation' to Paris instead of Barcelona.

That's what is a completely different game from the football we all go and watch on a Saturday, to the extent that it's barely even the same sport.

I just don't get why the 'average football fan' would care whether Messi signs for PSG or Man City.  It's not like he isn't going to be on TV constantly wherever he is; does it make much difference if he is turning out against Burnley and Aston Villa rather than the French equivalents of Burnley and Aston Villa?

It's not even as if City wont sign someone almost as good and be as boringly dominant with or without him anyway.

If he gets mixed up with his franchises and accidentally signs for MK Dons it might be a different story...

There is no denying the EPL is currently the strongest league in Europe but I think we go way overboard with how good it is.

We go on about how competitive it is and yet the fact is Man City are the dominant force in the league and have been for most of the last five years. Yes, this season is shaping in such a way that you could have four viable title contenders but let's be honest, it rarely, if ever, works out like that. Have we ever got to the end of a PL season and had three (let alone 4) genuine title contenders?

Most teams in the PL are there to get beat by the top clubs and then fight among themselves. You'll get a few who do more than that like a Leicester, but most are much of a muchness, who could finish top half or near the bottom. The fact that teams throughout the PL spend absurd fees for decent players and daft wages doesn't make it all that much more competitive than many of its European counterparts. We've just been conditioned over the years to think it is.

On the other hand the Champ, League One etc.,are genuinely competitive leagues where often you have absolutely no idea what's going to happen.

Paris St-Germain will look to sign Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 36, from Juventus in the summer of 2022 as a potential replacement for 22-year-old France striker Kylian Mbappe, who has been a long-time target of Real Madrid. (AS - in Spanish)
