Severance

But only for one month, maximum.

That is how I understood it.  There is an unwritten rule that although the contracts expire in June the Clubs pay the July salary of released players, which in the current Covid landscape is ridiculous.

It's not unwritten, it's an actual rule:

67.7  If such Player's application is successful he shall continue to receive from his Club as severance payment his weekly basic wage for a period of one month from the expiry date of his contract or until the Player signs for another Club, whichever period is the shorter, provided that where a Player signs for a Club within one month at a reduced basic wage then his old Club shall make up the shortfall in basic wage for the remainder of the month.

So if a player, who with us is on say £10K per week, signs for a new club on the 1st June, on say £5K per week, we have to pay £5K to that player for the month. If a player on £10K signs a new contract on 1st June for £10k or more, we don't need to pay anything.

Whilst this is raising a few eyebrows (and fists) with fans on here, this will not be something the club is unaware of. It's been in the EFL's rules for donkeys.

This.

Wednesday will know all the rules at the EFL and know how to apply them consistently and in a professional manner.  Nothing to worry about.

True. Whether Ch*nsiri has been told about it, or if he has did he listen and understand, is an entirely different thing though.

If you sell players while they are still in contract you could avoid this severance pay.

Severance pay makes sense when a player is retiring through age or injury.

It makes a reasonable settlement as a thank you for your service.

I would imagine anyway ffs

Won't he have already paid it for the last 6 years though?

Likely, yes - depends how contracts fell in the past, but whether he knows that's what it is and whether he was bothered because he was just spunking money around (rather in these 'leaner' times) may mean the act of paying it now could be something he notices and may try not to do.

Fair point, 'a fool and his money' and all that...

Good reminder.

But little incentive for buying clubs to start contract untill severance exhausted.

Cash is king with most owners.

And why pre-contract agreements are popular

I read about this last summer when Covid hit. Players contracts expire on July 1st but receive another months wage as cover so they’re not without wages while they sort a club.

Clubs had hoped last season this would have helped convince more players to have played through July last season following the delayed season.

Really makes your appreciate Kieran Lee and Atdhe Nuhiu who effectively played through July at no extra personal financial gain last summer. Disgraceful the club never acknowledged them leaving.

As much as our Chairman offered them

It’s not the amount, it’s just plain ridiculous they get an extra months pay for nothing. Anyone in a normal job hands in their notice they get paid until the day they leave and nothing more. The industry is just ridiculous
