Runners-up have to play runner-up. The 4 best 3rd-place finishers play 4 of the 6 group winners, leaving 2 group winners to play 2 of the 6 2nd-place finishers. That leaves the other 4 2nd-place finishers to contest the other 2 ties.

Apologies, you are right.

So win and we get Germany , France or Portugal

Draw and we get Slovakia, Sweden, Poland or Spain

I'd love to see us put on a performance and win comfortably and confidently against the Czechs.... but id also like to see us play our last 16 v Slovakia.

Interesting summary considering Germany lost to France.

Hopefully France believe their own hype & come unstuck like they did against Hungary.

Lost to an OG, and I thought Germany should have got something from that game.

Germany then put Portugal to the sword

Like ive said , Germany and Italy are only teams that have shown anything yet and tbh Italy's group is poor.

Wonder how England would perform if Southgate wasnt such a coward.

Italy look silky but I don’t think they’ll have the know-how to win the tournament. Semi finals for them

Still think it’s either France or Germany.

England will get last 16 or quarter finals at absolute best. I don’t think it matters who we play, we’ll still get knocked out

Aye. Negative nervous Nigel, with all that talent at his disposal. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Trying to play like Spain did 10 years ago.

I remember Germany at home in WC 2006 under Klinsmann.

Poor team but just went for it every game. Came 3rd & lost to eventual winners.

Wish we would just say fk it, let’s attack.
‘our first objective is to qualify’ 😴

Play at pace, score some goals & we’ll do it easier ffs.

We try and play like Spain, but don't have the players to do so.

We don't produce many players like the Spanish do. The only out and out creative player we have is Grealish and he's more of a ball carrier than a thread it through the eye of a needle type.

As you say: we should be playing on the front foot. Heck, go a bit direct if needs be.

I can see the logic behind wanting 2nd place but I just don't agree with it. When Germany won the WC they beat France and Brazil (host nation) on their way to the final and beat Argentina. 3 huge games that they took on and they demolished Brazil.

If we really want to win something at any point, not necessarily this tournament, we have to get out of the mindset of being afraid of every team we come up against. We have to prove that we are the best and relish the chance to prove it. I can't imagine France, Germany, Italy, Belgium being like we won't finish top of the group just in case we play a good team, it just sends out the message that we expect to get beat and you can see it in our performances.

Anyway, may all be moot because I dunno if you actually want England to finish 2nd.

i want us to play as many games as possible

so an easy game that gets us a round further is my preference.

would love it if we strolled to the final past easy teams, because the feeling around that final would be so amazing and even if we lost it would be the best ive ever seen us do.

plus any teams in the final it becomes anyone's game.

this stupid format though... how are we supposed to cheer on the team into a second round against germany when we can draw and play slovakia lol

just do the same format as the WC, its so simple.

Gilmour having to isolate due to Covid. Gutted for him.

Real shame for him.

We’ve got a ready made replacement though. Just need to fire David Marshall back into midfield again for the game at Hampden

The format is horrendous. For example all the praise for Wales for getting through to the knockouts, but 3 out of 4 of the group go through anyway, so hardly an achievement really is it?

its made the group stages seem so pointless and also it kind of proves how little a draw to scotland really means in the grand scheme,

again... do we even want to win our next game?

They should increase the number of participants from 24 to 32, making it 8 groups of 4 with the top 2 (16 in total) qualifying for the knockouts - the same format as the World Cup. Surely there’s another 8 teams who could have qualified who are good enough to be competitive

There's already enough terrible teams involved so less is better surely?

4 groups of 4 - TOP 2 GO THROUGH
