Giro d'Italia 2021 OMDT

So everybody's (surely yes?) favourite Grand Tour begins today.

It looks a pretty open field, some British interest and some big question marks over some of the big names...

Bernal... will his back hold out for 3 weeks?

Yates... can he survive the pressure of that last week?

Evenepoel... can he really be competitive with no racing for a year?

Landa... will the TT stages do for him?

Almeida... will the high mountains do for him?

Will it be another youngster breaking through?

Hindley, Vlasov, Carthy,  or Sivakov.

Or will Dan Martin, Vincenzo Nibali do it for the oldies?

And that's without mentioning Bennett Buchman, Soler et al.

I think it's going to be a cracker.

If I had to bet then I'd go with Yates but with the proviso that if Remco can ride himself race fit in the first two weeks without being too far back, he could pull off one of the biggest comebacks ever.

Standout stages look to be 1, 11, 14, 16, 20 and 21, taking in both TTs, the whote roads of Strade Bianchi and huge climbs like the Zoncolon.

Enjoy!

Is there any highlights on do you know mate? or is it just Eurosport?

I think it's on the Welsh Channel S4C as well if you can cope with Welsh commentary.

The Giro always blows hot and cold for me, too. This one is towards the latter mainly because so many of the star names are missing. But yesterday was a brilliant stage to watch live.

Be interesting to see what happens with Remco now after he's been bigged up so much and the obvious friction with Almeida. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear of him getting a convenient illness and going home.

I think he'll be more keen to experience that third week tbh... he needs the experience.

Bernal in a great place but we've been here before with riders putting everything into the first half of the race, and his back remains a huge ?.

I'm interested to see how Carthy and Yates get on. Both look extremely comfortable and to be riding within themselves... and both within striking distance. Yates in particular doesn't look like he's gone into the red at any point (obvs he has, but...)

A big day for anyone in that top 10 could still win this Giro.
