Should we consider an open letter to the players?

Recommended Posts

Given the magnitude of the game on Saturday I am wondering if we should consider an open letter to the players from the fans.

Back in the middle of Feb right before our match against Birmingham blues fans spotting the impending doom put together an open letter to the players it read:

Quote

Players of Birmingham City FC

We know it’s been a tough season. We understand and can see your frustrations, but...THIS SATURDAY IS A CUP FINAL! EVERY GAME NOW IS A CUP FINAL!

You are all custodians of our beloved football club. It’s time to dig deep and play for the badge, and play for us, the fans.

We need leaders on the pitch on Saturday. We need you to stand up. You need to believe you can take three points and begin to turn our season around.

We were here before you joined the club and we will be here long after you have left. You are all part of our 146-year history and tradition.

We want to see pride. We want to see passion. We want to see you fighting for every ball. Every tackle. Every run.

Every single fan would die to be wearing the shirt you get to wear week in, week out. We finish our shifts and turn to our club to provide some joy. We earn in a year what some of you earn 1-3 months.

This is our community. This is our passion. This is our pride. Remember this when you step out onto the pitch on Saturday.

The game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday is the turning point to save our season and, given our financial position, potentially to save our club. We cannot be another Bury FC.

On Saturday we will stand with you from afar but whatever happens you have to keep on fighting, give 100% and leave everything you have on the pitch. Every single game.

We are in this together. Keep right on to the end of the road. Over to you.

This banner was placed outside of the training ground and was widely acknowledged within the team and certain players addressing it on social media etc.

Unfortunately (for us) they went on to win that game and have since secured their safety.

Now admittedly at the time I thought it was a bit tinpot and was laughing at it, but with the grim reality of relegation looming large on Saturday is it time we considered doing something similar.

A cynic might well say that the message had zero impact on the following results for blues or that their new manager is responsible for the turn around in form, who knows perhaps the players really don't care but at this point are there any options we shouldn't be considering?

We need nothing less than 100% on Saturday from each player, if even then we don't win the game or results don't go our way elsewhere then fine but at least we can go doing knowing we gave it 100% on the final day. I don't want to see another drab, limp, and lifeless display from the players.

So what do you think?

Either way -

COME ON WEDNESDAY!!!!!

Better the banner style thing than a proper letter.

Last thing we need is players missing the game with a paper cut off the envelope.

I disagree. Imagine the pile-up of Bentleys outside the ground as the players all stop to read the banner. Airbags going off everywhere. They may save lives but would still cause enough friction injuries to wipe an entire team out.

It’s a great idea mate. Maybe it doesn’t have to be a letter. Why not go and tie our scarves to the fences in their hundreds, maybe thousands. A statement WAWAW.

Looks like our fans have already sent an open letter to the players, in the form of voting for Jack Marriot as Player Of The Season.

:duntmatter:

You know what? That should be our protest for the sh1tshow this season. Nevermind invading the pitch or chucking cans of tuna at DC. Voting Marriott player of the season, the players will know exactly what we think of them!

I'm all for sending the players a letter, just struggling with the content, perhaps fellow Owlstalkers can help with a suitable message. I've got the opening line:

Dear shirkers.....

Dear El Galapagos of the Owl Brigade,

You have fought our numerous enemies on the field and in the courts, with passion and honour.  You are still standing.

You have stood resolute in the face of severe hostility while the shadowy figures at the EFL have conducted raids on our points column.

You have been tormented and tortured by our overlord and his Western Union but still you stand, on the shores of Derbyshire for the great battle of our time.  Your blades rustic red with the bloods of our enemies.

We are proud to call you our brothers.  You have shown us great decency and given us great pleasure as you burn through the land indiscriminately, but we, the people of the Borough of Hills ask, nay, make a final demand of your nearly broken bodies.  One more swing of the axe.  One more defending of the keep.  One more plunder.  One more victory.

The 8th of May, the people of Derby will forget the Blitz of the Nazis on their town in 1941.  A new generation will know a new Blitz.   The Blitz of a Reach pinpoint cross and the incendiary device that is a Rhodes bullet header.

Your names will live on for eternity, in this life and the next.  In our hearts, our minds, you will always be.

When at the services on the M5, people will stop in awe at passing of a Blue&White decorated brother on his way to the loo.  'Did they witness the only game that has ever counted?'.  No answer will be required, the scars we all bare speak far louder than any mouth could speak.

At the pearly gates, fans will be asked by Him 'Who got the winning goal in the only game that matters?'. Everyone will know the answer.  'Pelupessy'.  You will see us to heaven.

On Saturday, you create a new standard in football for all dreamers to aim at.  You will create heaven on this earth before the after.

On Saturday, you become Sheffield Wednesday legends.  You will never die.

Yours,

The Owls.

This was tried on this website by @DeeJayOne in 2010 when he worked for the club, who asked for messages of support to be written so he could show the players.  We were two games from the end of season we went down , before we played utd. Needless to say, the messages were not quite what were intented and it became 20 pages of absolute vitriol before it was pulled.
