Social Media Blackout Next Weekend

Recommended Posts

Spoiler

The FA, Premier League, EFL, FA Women's Super League, FA Women's Championship, PFA, LMA, PGMOL, Kick It Out, Women in Football and the FSA will unite for a social media boycott from 15:00 BST on Friday 30 April to 23:59 BST on Monday 3 May, in response to the ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse received online by players and many others connected to football.

This has been scheduled to take place across a full-fixture programme in the men's and women's professional game and will feature clubs across the Premier League, EFL, WSL and Women's Championship switching off their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

As a collective, the game recognises the considerable reach and value of social media to our sport. The connectivity and access to supporters who are at the heart of football remains vital

Just watching the news story about it now

On national news

On national TV

So it's already working

There was already plenty of awareness that things are happening on twitter and other social media platforms that were not acceptable

Leaving for a weekend means they'll be back in a couple of days...

Why don't they just stay off for good until 1) Twitter moderates itself properly or 2) Somebody makes a platform which does moderate properly?

It's still a huge move though.

Firstly, it will force those who use social media for results and engagement to look elsewhere. Loads of people follow clubs on Twitter for score updates, etc — clubs not being on there, even for a single round of fixtures, will force people to other apps/services. That'll make social media companies worried on it's own.

Secondly, there's a lot of advertising scheduled on those platforms around the times of games, etc. Advertisers will likely suspend those ads on those platforms whilst the clubs aren't on there, which will affect the social platforms' revenue somewhat.

Also, the simple act of doing it and promoting that they are doing it, even if just for a single fixture round, is huge exposure for the issue. It'll be a massive talking point all week and through the whole weekend (and then beyond). Awareness is massive in itself.

Then... the act of doing it and the attention and conversation it generates could show the governments it is a really serious problem that needs addressing regulatory or legislatively.

Plus, maybe this is the first step and after this the leagues and organisations might indeed go further if nothing happens and the behaviour continues?

I really wouldn't underestimate the impact this could have.

Why are people racist? I just don’t get it. Racist people are just stupid and small minded. Why hate and/or abuse someone because they’re different to you? Racists just ought to grow up and start behaving like adults.

They’ll be racists on here that’ll think I’m a communist or a “tree hugger” because I don’t like racism.

Just watch, someone at some point will bring up the “Islamist” argument to justify their warped viewpoint.

It’s crackers!

Hahahahahahahahaha football really does think themselves being more important than they are.  The America tech giants will probably not even notice that some footballers had not posted his latest hair cut.

A week end! can they not even stretch to a week or better still indefinitely.

Would be better if the racists left the platforms
