Excellent. Trying to put some names to the team, think it's around 1898-99 ish.

Until 1877 we played at Myrtle Road, which I think is the Ball Inn ground.

 

Then the home ground was at Sheaf House up to 1880 when we played at Bramall Lane, although still played some games at Sheaf House as it was apparently cheaper to rent than BL.

 

Olive Grove was our ground from 1887-99

 

An OS map from 1894 below shows 3 of the grounds. Olive Grove ground although not marked is the rectangle under 'MIDLAND RAILWAY'.

A team photo at Olive Grove from the mid 1890's, with Sheffield Wednesday F.C. painted on the stand roof. That stand was removed and taken to Hillsborough.

 

Pattersons been playing some years then. No wonder he's showing down a bit.

After Olive Grove became too small to accommodate the fans the club put the new venue to a vote. The fans voted hugely in favour of Carbrook but the club chose Hillsborough because it was cheaper.

Is that the same ground that was the pigs training ground in the 60’s and 70’s ?. Yet another one of our cast offs .

Yep their training ground was at the Ball Inn ground on Myrtle Road. 

Not sure if that's the ground we played though, could be.

Ecclesall site was where the Tennis club now stands at end of Rustlings Road.

Before the road widening the stretch of land once occupied by Osbornes Mushet and Presto were a possible site and much more recently as a SWFC community/wellness centre.

Carbrook appeared to be the most feasible (Close to Carbrook Hall) for the 1899 move with a generous take up by fans of a share offer. The share take up was in the bag but an 11th hour offer from the Dixon Family of Hillsborough/Oughtobridge/Sheffield (A mute point); Saw a change of heart by The Wednesday as the work and money was put to use on the triangle of land at the North end of Dixons land. 

 

Dixon eventually donated the land and Estate house to the citizens of Sheffield as Library and Park.

I believe it was a case of the lease was not renewed as the Midland Railway wanted the land to expand the railway, so Wednesday had to leave.

Ahh maybe so...interesting tho that Hillsborough was not the choice of the fanbase at the time. Not like Wednesday to take the cheaper option
