BREAKING - Sheffield Wednesday under ANOTHER transfer embargo

Just now, Grandad said:

Luton Town have now confirmed their embargo is purely down to the same reasons as Coventrys.

"

'However, EFL rules couldn't be adjusted to meet the Companies House extension and require that signed accounts still needed to be submitted in March, which the club was unable to achieve.

'The matter will be resolved as our auditors conclude the report in the next couple of weeks.'"

So while clubs with early dates were able to extend the deadline for accounts submission to Companies House - the EFL still required them to be submitted in March

So they will come off the list too

Leaving 6 clubs

refreshng to see the clubs making statements about this too to avoid worry amongst their fanbases

If our accounts aren't due until April is this to do with the previous year?

Given there are 10 clubs in there and we just posted a profit in our accounts this seems more a Covid -19 or delayed accounts issue? If it’s the former I think the EFL approach is quite heavy handed.

At this rate we might have more leeway to rebuild if we do down as I don’t think this would apply.

This, its not financial fair play related, it will either be due to the lateness of the accounts or the failure to pay players due to the effects of Covid. Wouldnt expect this to affect any of the ten clubs in the summer. Seems like the EFL being the EFL to me.

10 clubs is huge and more to follow would be my guess

The effects of the pandemic have not been fully heard yet

Putting Wednesday and how badly they are run out of the equation for a moment. 10 clubs under embargo is huge

It’s almost half the division

Then you have teams relegated from premier league coming down with massive parachute payments

I’m not sure what the fair way to sort it is but there  is no doubt the whole competition is compromised

Could the club's in the Championship turn  on the efl ? 10 clubs could be very peed off.

maybe they will, but being heavy handed in the middle of a Pandemic and when no revenue is coming in puts the EFL in an awkward position

This really is the season to end all seasons.

No fans in the ground for the entire season

6 managers

Points deduction

Transfer embargoes

The recall of Westy and Hutch from oblivion

relegation

etc etc

Absolutely messed up season.

If this isn’t clear proof the rules are unworkable and need ripping up, then football has completely lost the plot.

Why the hell can't the EFL come out and at least tell the fans ( through the media ) what this is all about, seriously they are a total joke and are now becoming the reason why clubs ARE getting into difficulties with their heavy approach.

Let's also remember there are 10 clubs on that list, so nearly half the division 😆!

Maybe a governing body should show some leadership and communication with the supporters to stop rumours and unnecessary concern

There again we are talking about the EFL

So basically whilst we are under an embargo we arent able to renew our own players contracts? So the embargo must have come in to force after Bannan signed.

Other players maybe wanting to accept new contracts from us Lees and Reach etc but aren't able to ?

Leaves the door open to ruin us further in the summer if we are still under an embargo whilst the likes of the big clubs are able to cherry pick your talent.

Efl are not fit for purpose

I think contracts can be extended working within parameters ie not increased wages.

Given the number of clubs involved, it puts some of the financial issues many are upset about into perspective. It’s been reported across the country a few times when other clubs like Derby and Cardiff delayed payment of wages. SWFC were one of the few not to defer wages at the beginning of the pandemic though.

It’s clearly an administrative issues, what really should be then question is if the EFL doesn’t comment and the clubs are not commenting who is leaking this information to the Mail ?

EFL are not fit for purpose .. or is it a connected official at one of the clubs.

I agree on this. Clearly clubs taking time to get everything in order because they know the EFL police will be waiting with any excuse to punish someone should they get anything wrong.

Coventry statement

Coventry City can confirm that it has been placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL.

The Government, due to the Coronavirus crisis, allowed companies to extend the deadline to file company accounts by three months and Coventry City chose to take up this option.

Unfortunately the EFL has decided not to replicate this extension within their own rules, which surprises us as they have amended a number of other rules due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Coventry City will be filing their accounts as required by Companies House within three months of the end of February, at which point the transfer embargo from the EFL will be removed.

This is purely an administrative embargo imposed by the EFL. This has no effect on the day-to-day running of the Club or its finances, and will have no effect on planned transfer activity in the upcoming transfer window.

Coventry City Chief Executive Dave Boddy said: “It’s disappointing that the EFL have chosen to do this.

“The Government has allowed companies to extend the deadline to file accounts and we chose to do this, extending from the end of February to the end of May.

“It’s ridiculous that the EFL's regulations on this do not replicate this approach that the Government has taken, especially when they have amended other rules of their during the pandemic.

”The EFL’s imposition of this does not have any effect on us, but it is disappointing nonetheless that they have taken this approach to take action against Clubs who are simply doing what the Government is allowing us to do.”"
