Realistic first possible signings for Div 1

5 low-ish cost ones from Scotland.

Andy Irving at Hearts - same age as Liam Shaw, central midfielder, wand of a left foot, out of contract, unlikely to sign a new deal, after a move for more money, already better than Liam Shaw IMO. Instant upgrade.

Declan Gallagher at Motherwell - 30 years old and in Scotland squad. Again out of contract and their club captain. Steady if unspectacular centre back, 6ft 6 (ideal for L1), good leader, strong in the air and certainly good enough for League 1/lower Championship.

Stephen O’Donnell at Motherwell - covers captain role when Gallagher is out of the side. 28 and in his prime, again member of the Scotland squad, again out of contract and available on a free, an upgrade on Liam Palmer and keeps him out of the Scotland team.

Ofir Marciano at Hibs - we need to sign 3 goalkeepers in the summer presuming Westwood is leaving. Out of contract, Israeli international, and one of the best keepers I’ve seen at Hibs in my lifetime. Probably the best since Andy Goram. Leaving the club and being linked with a move to England.

Thomas Robert at Airdrie - yes it’s Laurent formerly of Newcastle’s son. This is probably unlikely because Celtic and Championship clubs are looking at him but worth asking the question. He chose to sign for Airdrie in order to play football so its worth exploring if unlikely. A very talented winger like his old man and definitely going on to bigger and better things.

Irving has the potential to be outstanding - reckon there’ll be a lot of interest - not so sure that him & Bannan in the same (3rd division) team would work ?

The days of “only (around) 2 million” as well gone at this club - not spend that on an entire team (sic) let alone 1 player

I was more referring to that being a pretty decent price for a top end L1 striker. When you consider what Ivan Toney went for £2m for Yates seems more than fair.

I’m sure any money spent this summer will most likely come from player sales at Wednesday.

Well we can either try and snag some lower league bargains looking to make a real name for themselves. Or we can do what we did the last time we got relegated and sign old has-been journeymen. Would rather find another Kieran Lee than a Gary Teale

The Lee formula should be our first go-to.  That is players who previously had long spells at academies of the top clubs in the country, who then had to drop down and successfully prove themselves at a lower league club.  If you can find players who fit into those parameters, you're more likely to be getting a technically sound player (due to their years spent at a top academy) who has potential to progress up the leagues with you, and also has desirable metal attributes as they've bounced back and started to rebuild a career doing the hard yards in the lower leagues.

I don't know enough about L1/L2 players to know if there are any that fit within that category and are realistic signings financially.

That’s a fair point about Bannan with Irving in the same team.

Whomever is brought in  (for free) needs to be subject to ‘due diligence’

can I suggest a week playing 6 a side, a game on astroturf with a view to a further week appraisal ‘ on grass’ (not talking about ingestion - got enough wasters playing like they’re on canaboids) before any hasty decision is made  - worked well in the past 🤔😳

Plymouth; Gillingham; Accrington - should easily secure mid- table mediocrity 😉

Sign the best up and coming players from different clubs and put them together in one team should be an effective way to build a good team.

To be honest if we are mid table at the end of next season I think we will have done well. As things stand we should aspire to be mediocre because if we carry on like we are we will be in L2 the season after next.

Would you rather go down the failed road of signing over priced over age players on one last pay day who have put us in this position.

or pick up the best talent from the lower leagues which we will be in soon, mould them into a team and come back stronger or have resale value in the player?

Would love him back

I liked the guy but why do we always look backwards rather than forwards? Let's bring in younger players on the up with potential resale value rather than ex players who were basically ok as substitutes.

Ref😉?

As noted above ‘mid table mediocrity’ is likely to to be an achievement or perhaps an ambition ? (😉)

He played for us in 2015. That’s good enough.

Darren moore will know the league and who to target so I'm sure he get the right players in if it comes to that

That’s if mooore is allowed to bring in the players he chooses....

He's 6 years older now. He was potentially good, now he's a known quantity who had to go to Cyprus to find a club.  We will never sell him at a profit.

He might do a job at L1 level but we need players who can improve and be sold at a profit or the club just continues being a money pit with an owner who hasn't got much interest in spending.

Some striker options...

Charlie Wyke - 28 year old Sunderland striker who is out of contract in the summer. Big striker who has scored 22 in 35. However he may have better options in the Championship or possibly even staying at Sunderland.

Dion Charles - The 25 year old Accrington striker has scored 17 in 32 but has been linked with Brentford and also Hull.

Jerry Yates - 24 year old Blackpool striker. 16 goals in 35. Likes to play on the shoulder. Has been linked with Championship moves to clubs like Forest but suggests he’ll only cost around £2m.

Luke Jephcott - 21 year old Plymouth striker has scored 16 in 34. We’ve been linked with him last January but rumoured to cost around £3.5m. Having a dry spell at the moment and hasn’t scored since early February.

Joe Pigott - 27 year old Wimbledon striker whose contract ends this summer. Has scored 14 in 35. He’s a big unit and has also previously been linked with us.

Paul Mullin - 25 year old Cambridge striker who has impressively scored 26 in 39 and leads the L2 scoring charts. Unfortunately for Cambridge they only signed him on a 1 year deal so he’s free to go in the summer. Very interesting player.

Thanks for the research and putting the time in to that but one of the problems is that people want us to sign these young, hungry and upcoming players with a

view to them making it at Championship level and above, and then commanding big fees so we can follow the Brentford model.

Of all of those you’ve listed it just looks like they have a decent record at League 1 level and most of them are mid 20s already. Not much there to suggest they will be Championship players. The likes of Jack Marriott had similar records at a younger age and we’ve seen what he’s like.

I think we need to run a smaller squad, maybe 20 or so players with the academy lads getting bench time to fill in the rest. Of those 20 players we can’t carry any crocks so Luongo, Dunkley, Westwood etc need to go. Then think we need to blend a team with a mixture of experienced players, some signings like Brunt or Whelan from PL academies who just weren’t quite up to the grade there and we’ll probably have never heard of them. Then a few signings from actual League 1 clubs who’ve been doing the business the last couple of seasons, preferably on frees too.

Complete overall of the squad needed unless dc has had a total rethink ie strategy and planning and who advisers can any of us be really confident that we’ll get the players required to make us competitive and be in the mix next season? Let’s hope the relegation at least makes him get rid of the person really in control and let’s moore go for who he thinks we need rather who he will get
