matthefish2002
Sad news that Frank Worthington has passed away. I know its a cliché but you don't get players or characters like this anymore. RIP https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56495453 Seems not a week goes by without a famous great old player leaving us.

Mickjj
In the 2012 promotion I was a guest of the match sponsor at the Huddersfield away game . Frank was the guest speaker and was hilarious. One of the best story tellers I've ever seen as well as one of the best ever maverick players.
fredmciverslovechild
There were so many players like him back in the 1970's and 1980's; real football mavericks. He was, however, one of the best. Sadly lacking in today's game. RIP Frank.

nevthelodgemoorowl
Players of that sort of quality don't seem to come along at the same sort of frequency any longer. RIP Frank Worthington !
Howards back
A real maverick like so many of his day. Thrilled the crowds with the unexpected unlike today where everything has to be done to a plan.
edmontonowl
Part of a top Leicester team in the 70s. Joe Mercer put him in the England side after Revie left. Mercer started to get something out of the side with style and FW was a big part of that. Didn't last sadly. Still remember that eastern European tour. RIP FW

Otley Owl
Played for my local club Guiseley at the end of his career. Down in legend for hitting a shot against the bar with enough force for it to rebound onto the halfway line. RIP.

Still remember that eastern European tour. RIP FW He was one of a whole raft of talented "mavericks" from that era that Ramsey, Revie and Greenwood largely ignored. As well as Worthington there was Rodney Marsh, Alan Hudson, Peter Osgood, Stan Bowles, Duncan McKenzie, Charlie George, Lawrie Cunningham,.........................and Tony Currie only won half as many caps as he should have. It is no coincidence that during this time we failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cup Final Tournaments, as we seemed to prefer packing our side with tow the line, honest triers, (bit like Wednesday ) Edited March 27, 2021 by sheriwozgod
