Wildsmith - 7 - Probably fortunate not to be punished for the dropped corner in the 1st half, but otherwise, a very assured performance. Major positive...he's reliable...unlike the other one *rolls eyes*

Urhoghide - 8 - Man of the Match - Absolutely superb. Dike is a strong boy, but Osaze dealt with him better than any of our other centre halves. Competed well, looked assured. Need to get him tied down.

Lees - 7 - Ruffled early on, and looked like Barnsley's physicality would get the better of him. But, improved, and put in a decent display.

Borner - 7 - A bit rash early on, and had the tread carefully after the early booking, but came out on top, and put in a steady performance.

Palmer - 7 - It was a vast improvement to the last couple of horror shows. He's still woefully incompetent with the ball at his feet, but stood up to the aerial bombardment, and played a crucial role in the 2nd goal.

Reach - 5 - He just looks disinterested. You can't criticise his work rate really...he gets up and down...but it all seems a bit forlorn.

Pelupessy - 7 - Another one who responded to a couple of really poor displays, with a more than adequate display. Battled away, and picked up a lot of those crucial 2nd balls that Barnsley look to thrive on.

Bannan - 7 - It wasn't the sort of game where Bannan excels, but he put in a good shift, and produced a superb bit of quality for Rhodes' 1st goal.

Paterson - 6 - Worked hard, toiled away, and performed an important role. Lacking quality, but we all know that anyway.

Windass - 8 - He's a threat when he plays on the shoulder, and caused Barnsley issues with his eagerness to stretch the play. Showed a nice bit of selflessness to tee up Rhodes... if only he'd have done the same for Pelupessy against Norwich!

Rhodes - 8 - Typical Rhodes performance. Worked hard, but didn't have too much impact on the game...and then BOOM. Goal. And then repeat it again, in the 2nd half. Superb. We've waited 4 years to have a manager to utilise him correctly, and when we finally appoint one, he'll be leaving!

Overall...

Matched Barnsley. Didn't take the risks in the defence to allow Barnsley to punish us. Got the ball forward, and looked a threat in behind. Took our goals well, and could've had a couple more. Stood up to Barnsley's ultra-direct play, and deserved a clean sheet...and would've got one, but for a unfortunate deflection.

I still maintain, had we persevered with a Windass/Rhodes partnership all season...we'd have scored enough goals to stay up comfortably. Let's hope Moore sticks with it, and isn't tempted to tinker needlessly.

It's the hope that kills you...

Why was it a jammy win ?

Apart from the fact we should have been 2-0 down after 15 minutes....(they missed a sitter 3 yards out from a corner inside the first 4mins? & Wildsmith VERY lucky the ref blew for a foul after he dropped the ball and they scored). I’m also pretty sure Pelupessy dragged down Dike during a corner in the last 15min and the ref missed it, pretty obvious penalty on the replay. AND although Osaze/Borner/Lees all played well, they won’t get away with deliberate fouls or constant shirt pulling every single game - thought the ref was very very casual. Or have we all forgotten the sitters they missed early on cause we scored our only shot on target after 38 minutes?

We hardly battered them did we? Goals from the only chances Rhodes had and 1 of those was a gift after there last man lost the ball and played Windass through...

No idea why they played such a high line and didn’t change it.DM tactically won that battle as our long balls exposed the huge spaces they left at the back. Although there LB had a stormer, quicker than Windass and rarely allowed us to punish them more than we should of.

We played better than we have done recently but even still on a different day we could of been 2 goals down at HT and we all know what happens when we go behind...We’ll need lucky days like today to go our way if we want to stay up!

It was one of the few games in the last 18 months I enjoyed, full blooded derby and we competed for the full 90, which has been rare.  I think you are pretty close with your marks there. I’d maybe say Paterson had a good 1st half but went missing in the 2nd, though he kept trying. The other thing is Reach did slightly better but was still frustrating, especially when I saw Palmer manage to get forward far more often than him, which should never be the case. However, he really shouldn’t have gone for the ball over his shoulder in the 2nd half when it was clear he wouldn’t get there and only Bannan  sprinting across saved us from a really dangerous situation

Yes, all good points.

But of a miserable sod, aren’t you?

To be fair I thought the Pelupessy one was a penalty too. The Wildsmith one was the correct decision as there was a foul on Lees before that. Doesn’t take away the fact that Wildsmith dropped a simple catch. He’d so awful!

Wildsmith is reliable in the fact we know he’s poo! Says it all that Westwood is playing through a broken rib because the pony tailed wonder is useless!

Can't agree with this. They missed an open goal, but the ball was bouncing high and Sollbauer didn't have much time to react. I think the open goal that Rhodes missed was easier. He has a clear run at the ball. So don't see how we should have been 2 down at HT when we scored and missed an open goal and Barnsley only had one clear cut chance.

You also don't mention that for the Barnsley goal that Dike drags Pelupessy down. It is a clear foul and Pelupessy was challenging the guy who won the header from the side, the ball would never have reached Morris without that foul. And the shot itself was a lucky deflection too.

I thought Dike got away with fouls all match. There was one on Pelupessy where he deliberately ran into him as Pelupessy was jumping for a header, without playing the ball. Was a bit malicious and should have been a yellow card. Also not convinced Dike couldn't have avoided the one where he followed though on Wildsmith, the ball got nowhere near him.

Congratulations to the players and to Darren Moore. Impressive, a complete change of tactics to a style of play that suited the team selected. Can’t imagine its how DM wants to play but credit to him for adapting to the circumstances so quickly.

MoM Rhodes or Urhoghide for me, gave it to Rhodes who had a fine game.

Credit to Palmer the way he pressed their defender for our second.

I thought the referee was so inconsistent with his decisions, but hugely favoured Barnsley.

We seemed to get penalised for every little niggly thing, whilst Barnsley got away with murder. Their theatrics and general conduct reminded me of Preston with Pearson and Co. Clever, sneaky...and they got away with the lot.

Neither of the penalty shouts were even contenders.

Although I do agree about the disallowed goal, Wildsmith certainly wasn't fouled, but I do wonder whether it was blown for a foul on one of our defenders instead.

Urgohide for me ...

However a very special mention for Barnsley's I follow commentary trio ...

I think it was Matt Bailey and Wayne Goodison with the mercurial Beast that is John Parkin ....

Obviously they were "Barnsley" but also very professional in the way they covered the game ...

Parkin early in the game setting up impromptu  "punch ups" between our Daz n Barnsley's centre backs (Daz got the nod)

Special mention went to the bottle of Malt 🥃 that one of the lads mentioned he'd got , to be followed by Parkin's  "if it ant got a froth on it i'm not interested retort"🍺.....

And those Fan shout outs 😂😂😂 Pearson's never come up with yesterday nugget in our games ...

Parkin shouts out....

" Happy 8th Birthday wishes to Lily Watson from her dad who's in ......

WTF:

Thailand ...........

I haven’t seen it mentioned but what a terrible state the pitch was. It looked like a golf fairway where no one had replaced their divots and just filled them with sand. The ball was bobbing all the time no wonder Barnsley don’t play it on the floor.
People have hammered the Wednesday pitch but from what I’ve seen there’s lots more worse.
