Is it worth trying to develop your own players any more?

Not tying down Shaw has cost the club From £2million upwards, we should have snapped Leicester offer up as soon as Hirst made it clear that's where he wanted to go. 

Whatever transfer business we have done under Chansiri has been appalling, no plan no effort to move players on etc. 

If we are customers then the players are commodities and need treating as such, buy low and sell high.

He will be nowhere near their first team for some time.

He will either be in their U21's or they will probably send him out on loan for a season to a low league club in Scotland or the EFL.

 

Much like they have done with Scott Robertson one of their most highly rated starlets. Same age as Shaw, midfielder too, currently on loan at Doncaster.

Remember Chansiri talking about this in that ramble of an interview. He was dismissive of young players who had played only a few games wanting big money. He said he couldn’t or wouldn’t break the wage structure for such youngsters.

He seems totally taken aback by the reality of the situation and it’s doubtful if he even understands the rules regarding clubs from ‘foreign’ leagues just helping themselves for a pittance of compensation. This after the George Hirst pantomime too. Maybe he believes he was right that Hirst and Clare weren’t going to make it big and nothing was really lost. One thing seems obvious to those who have watched recent games though. Both Shaw and Urhoghide are a class apart and have shown they can prosper in the Championship after just a few games. Surely the likes of Neil Thompson and Lee Bullen  must have recognised this and must have been pushing to get them tied down. ( Or did they just not bother when nobody listened)
 

A structure breaking contract at the right time is peanuts compared to the millions in future fees and add ons that can be gained by astute handling of young players. Look across the city Mr C. Remember the names of Brooks, Maguire, Walker and the millions they brought into their first club.

He is 20 next month. In 3 to 4 years time he'll be the reaching his full potential. It wouldn't surprise me if he's pushing for a spot in the England setup by then.

Mark my words. We've let a gem go there.

Depends really, Hirst could have pulled us in around £2m if reports are believed, Clare we could have possibly got around £1m for if he'd stayed and pushed on that second season, Shaw we could easily have got a couple of million within the next year or so with a new contract and more games under his belt......the same with Urhoghide if he carries on as he is. Decent amounts really and with one good season you never know how much more

 

But....in reality with Chansiri in charge its not even worth thinking about

Yes - if we are going to take seriously breaking young players in the first team and retaining them.

No - if we carry on with the policy we have employed over the last few years.

Now at the time, we had Hooper, FF, Fletcher, Joao, Nuhiu, Winnall and Rhodes.

Seemingly he wasn't good enough to get ahead of those at that stage, but clearly that hoarding of strikers cut off a route from academy to first team. 

 

Situation is totally different now, there is a pathway, but its just a shame its managed by incompetence and a lack of structure, so now were losing our youngsters for a totally different reason! 

 

 

He was rightly 8th choice because this was about 3 years ago and you’d assume he’s developed since in some way and he can’t score at Championship level. 
 

Even the likes of Nuhui and Winnall scored every so often so when he had 7 players in front of him, some of which were good ex PL players then he can’t get a look in on merit

Of course not. We should axe the Academy now.

 

When has it ever produced proper players or profits? For us?

 

Brentford scrapped theirs some time ago and made £20 million profit last year. Promotion this.

 

Bet Benham's betting empire is much better than us analysing big data for a related cost / benefit analysis.

I can understand why Brentford have adopted a different approach, but would argue it’s essential for a Wednesday to maintain an Academy set-up.  Sheffield is a big city, and still (I think) very much a football city.  It’s important to maintain that dream of being spotted an developed by your local club, it’s part of the club’s role in the community and it can be a source of valuable income.  For me, if we ditch the Academy we might as well pack it in as we will have lost our soul.
