The story here can be summed up in a sentence, but I will elaborate further below:-

 

Chairman (Chansiri) buys a football club as a "toy" and immediately admits he knows nothing about football, - he then proceeds to demonstrate that what he had said was absolutely and completely true.

 

When he first arrived at the club, he appointed a number of people who were experienced in football, either as former players / coaches or on the management side.  He formed a "committee" with these people and initially the signs looked positive.  Under Carlos Carvalhal and in concert with the committee, decent signings were made and on the playing side there was progress which ultimately took us to the play off final.  The brand of football that first season was frequently very attractive and exciting to watch.  Unfortunately as is frequently the case across the years of our history, on the day of the play-off final, we "didn't turn up" and were defeated by a Hull City side who definitely did turn up.

 

In the following season, a more pragmatic and less attractive style of football was adopted and we scraped into the play-offs, losing in the semi-final, even though with a more attacking style, we all know, we could have beaten Huddersfield Town, who then went on to be promoted, winning the play-off final.  In the meantime, ticket prices were raised dramatically and Pay On The Day fans were pretty much priced out, with an apparent preference for "encouraging" fans to buy season tickets.

 

Since that second season under the current Chairman / Owner, we have had a steady decline, which was principally caused by overspending on too many high price, high salaried players, whom we could probably have done as well or better without.  In particular,a figure of around £8 million on Jordan Rhodes when we had Forestieri, Joao, Winnall, Nuhiu, Hooper and Fletcher already on the books.  Several players were purchased who never or rarely appeared in the matchday squad.  This is illustrated as an example by the signing of Almen Abdi for around £3 milllion, who played a handful of games and was pretty well always injured for the rest of his time with the club.

 

One by one, the people with experience left the club and from what we can gather, the cause of these departures seems to be that Chansiri, although admitting he knows nothing about football, does not listen to the advice of people who have the relevant knowledge and experience.  He seems to prefer to make his own unilateral decisions and go his own way.  He does however, seem to listen to an "adviser" who is also an agent.  The said adviser recommends players under his management, many of whom have disappointed.  Chansiri seems unable to recognise that the adviser / agent is feathering his own nest, rather than acting in the best interests of the club.

 

The overspending during the above mentioned period meant that the club had exceeded the P&S rules and the Chairman decided to "sell" the ground in order to correct the overspend.  He ended up taking too long to complete the sale and ended up trying to backdate the transaction into a previous year's accounts.  An action that was discovered in an EFL investigation and resulted in a deduction of 12 points to take effect at the beginning of the current season.  The penalty was reduced on appeal to 6 points.

 

As a result we are now in the position of having a threadbare squad, having lost quite a few of the successful side due to the expiry of their contracts and with half a dozen more due to expire in June 2021, we may well end up having to scrape by on free transfers and loans to make up next season's squad.

 

A succession of managers have come and gone - again seemingly recommended by the adviser / agent and currently we are under the caretaker charge of one of our long term coaches who has in the past been coaching the junior squads. To be fair, he is doing a decent job, but we remain perilously close to relegation with very little movement during the recent transfer window.

 

We "older" supporters have been through these depressing periods over and over again since the 1960s, but somehow this time there's a feeling for some of us, that the club is no longer ours and the excitement and anticipation that we once felt on matchdays, has given way to expecting the worst and just hoping to avoid embarrassment.  Recent matches have shown improved results with the caretaker head coach, but performances are still not setting the world alight.  Realistically, we can only hope to survive in the championship, - and that the owner finds a buyer who will re-set the club and run it on a much more professional and fan-friendly manner.  However, whether any potential buyer would meet Chansiri's asking price seems extremely doubtful.

 

As always, - time will tell.  Who knows what the next chapter holds.

Somehow, the third oldest club in the league decided the best way to celebrate our 150th anniversary by baking a spherical(ish) cake to get in the Guinness book of records.

It looked a bit gash.

It was embarrassing.

That was about the full extent of the celebrations.

Oh My God. This might be the funniest thing i've ever seen. I'm on page 4, cakeball cathedral is my favourite so far. Although the original picture with your owner and some chefs is just amazing

For background , according an ex -recent player (Wallace), Chansiri and his kid give team pep talk just before game and his 12 year old son bought Rhodes, for £10 million.

 

Also, interviewed  Cowley Bros via Skype for manager's job when Bruce fled. 

 

Chaniri's  recruitment agents - Doyen - also agents to footballers and sign some they represent.

 

Than stole our best kid - Hirst jnr - and got him to Leicester free, via some brewery in Belgium. 

 

Of course , no suggestions of conflicts or commissions and their agent Paxo is still embedded at club.

 

That's what we are dealing with , plus FFP dodgy dealings (backdating legal documents for stadium sale).

 

What's frightening is what we don't know.
