Izzy Brown - Financial Penalty looming?

The players seem really up for a fight. Yesterday was a great example of battling team-ethic.

I don’t see any of this from Brown. He has barely deserved his cameos, let alone a start.

I saw a hint of this from Green at Coventry. Gave the ball away for the first goal, threw his arms up and stopped chasing back - hope that was a one-off rather than his attitude. Way too soon to know.

Noticed this from Green too, but there were 5 or players who could have got a tackle in or an interception in after but didn’t. Shambles goal. Pelupessy and Borner especially poor

How can you possibly enter into a restrictive clause like that - what is the suggestion, you play the loanee regardless of his performance levels - ridiculous.

Brown has played once for Chelsea, as a sub in 2015. He's 24 with little prospects of playing for Chelsea in future.

Shows how mad football has become when the so-called big clubs have these demands for players they really have no interest in.

I can sort of understand the premise of it with younger players - if they aren't playing then they might as well be training with the top club they are parented by and learning that way.

But like you say, the guy isn't a young kid anymore. These clubs just farm players they don't need until such time that they get a decent offer having had other clubs check how good they are and pay a good proportion of their wages most of the time. The ones that are good enough at that level get loaned out once or twice then break into the squad. It is certainly arguable that Brown could have had a much more productive career to date by settling with a smaller club than Chelsea rather than being farmed out here, there and everywhere.

If true why on earth have we accepted such a clause.

As for Brown, he doesn’t deserve a start as it stands. Seen nothing from him to suggest he’s going to help us stop up

that's modern football for you.

It's not that we accept that clause, it's more of a accept it or don't have him.

Cant comment on his fitness, but his game is about creating chances in the final third, so he’s been hamstrung by us not having any strikers Contrary to what some think, he isn’t a winger, and won’t be bombing down the flanks, before looping the ball into the middle His game is about, ball down the side of the centre backs, and setting strikers free in the box We don’t have that sort of movement up front. We don’t need a player like Izzy Brown, to simply thread balls out to the wing.

To be fair I haven't seen many people think or expect that of him.

Wasn't there a rumour he had turned up to the ground yesterday then left before kick-off? Saw it mentioned in the matchday thread.

Sheffield Wednesday face a ‘financial penalty’ from Chelsea if they don’t play on loan midfielder Izzy Brown in more games, reports The Sun on Sunday.

Brown, 24, joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan at the start of the campaign. He’s since made 15 Championship appearances for the Owls in what’s been an arduous season for both Brown and Wednesday.

If this is true, I wonder a) how big the penalty is, and b) whether it depends on minutes or appearances. If its appearances, it might explain why Pulis kept lobbing him on up front for the last 5 minutes.

This ^

Big clubs hold all the power.

Marko Grujić had the same when he went to Cardiff City on loan from Liverpool a couple of years ago.

Crazy the power of the big clubs. They will have clauses to get him playing and drive up his value. Hector had to sign a new contract before going on loan to us. We made him a much more valuable player and Fulham paid Chelsea for that.

I think it is crazy how many players the top clubs have on their books

He's out of contract with Chelsea in the summer, they were expecting us to be their shop window, can see why they're miffed.

But it's also Brown's last chance at getting a decent move somewhere, you'd think he'd at least bust a gut trying.

Maybe - but surely Chelsea know we are in a battle until May, and Brown is just a luxury.

They'd be better asking SWFC to send him back and farm him out to say Cardiff or back to Huddersfield, if they'd want him.

TBH Brown's style just doesn't suit the Championship IMO. He's not good enough for the PL, and both him and Chelsea probably think he's too good for L1 - no pay back there.

I think he be better either in Scotland or the USA; a bit like the late 70s when Best, Marsh and Pele use to rock up giving exhibition performances.

It suited the championship last season for Luton and before that when he was a key part of Huddersfield getting promotion...

I don't see a player with much fight tbh.

Technically, he's obviously pretty good, but he always looks half asleep when he comes on.

Agree with the sentiments regarding Chelsea and their model. They have guys on their books, who are over 25 - that never make a first team app - and are just loaned out again and again.

That Lucas Paizon just left them. He was their longest serving player, having made a grand total of 4 apps or something like that. The guy is about 26 lol

He did OK at Luton, only played in half their games. His spell at Huddersfield was 4 seasons ago now, hardly kicked on has he.

He looks off the pace and hasn't done enough under 3 different managers to warrant a regular start. Yesterday he was left out of the squad and seemingly got the hump on. Everyone knows we could do with more creativity but he has been a let down.

The easy way to stop it is to put a proper limit on the number of players the top clubs can loan out. This would make young players less willing to sign for clubs like Chelsea where they have no realistic chance of playing first team football. It is ok at the moment because they know they will be loaned out to play first team football.

It would also result in reduced transfer fees and wages as the big clubs would not have a risk free ability to make other clubs pay wages and facilitate players' development.

He played nearly 30 games for Luton, wasn't he their leading assist and chance creator?

But for whatever reason it hasn't worked out here, even though we're literally crying out for a creative midfielder, maybe he got the hump when his boy left and then Pulis came in and his face didn't fit

Jimmy Smith!

Brown isn't playing because every time he's been given a chance he's been poor.

You can see he's got something in his locker but he's so laid back he's almost horizontal.

He's not been given many chances to be fair.  Started first three League games and not started one since.  Only had sub appearances to impress.
