Paul Cook turns down short term contract with Sheffield Wednesday

Recommended Posts

I think we have to consider DC’s position here, whether or not he’s planning to sell. First and foremost we have to maintain our championship status, then we can reassess. It’s odd, so many on here are quick to point out, it’s all about staying up, nothing else matters at the moment. We can see that in our recruitment, and the contract situation, so why do we think the managerial situation would be any different? If Cook was confident in his own ability, he would have taken the opportunity to prove to DC, that he is the right man for the job.

Clubs sacking record?

We held on to Jos and Monk for too long.

If the reason he has turned us down is the length of the contract then he has gone down in my estimation. Should back himself to do well and earn a longer contract rather than want the gravy train to turn up first.

Nah. Put yourselves in Cook’s shoes. A 4 month contract is absolutely ridiculous. He will value himself more than that - especially while it’s still relatively early days in his management career.

Can't recruit players he wants, doesn't even have time to work with the players he'd inherit due to fixtures. Would be a hiding to nothing, putting your reputation on the line, not to mention relocating for a short term job, working for someone who seemingly doesn't value you

You're not putting your reputation on the line for all the reasons you've mentioned above. Get it right, you're a genius, get it wrong then your hands were tied.

It’s not a vote of confidence is it. “Have it for 4 months if you want it”.

The only explanation is that we might think there will be more options in the summer with travel restrictions removed

It could be that the takeover will be completed by the end of the season and the new owners don't want to start off saddled?

Fair enough, 6 months out of work and counting having managed 1 club at this level.

If he's confident in his own ability, he could always back himself to land a longer contract at a club which isn't beset by off-field issues as mammoth as ours, of course.

It could be interpreted as an insulting offer.

Get it wrong and it puts other potential clubs off.

Cook has a good reputation. He’s not daft.

His reputation isn't getting him very far, Cardiff looked straight past him, might end up waiting for a chance that doesn't come at this level.

Not really logical.
If you’re going to spend tens of millions buying a business. You’re not worried about terminating  contracts of employees you don’t want.
If you’re DC, you could care less about decisions that the next owner has to make

If you’re DC you should want to do everything possible to protect the value of the asset you’re trying to sell. If that means offering the best candidate a long term deal to get him to come and keep you as a championship team then so be it.

Maybe. It was just a thought.

Not as simple as that. We've wasted the transfer window, not that Chansiri would relinquish control and fixture wise have no time to work with the players on the training ground  to make any sort of material impact.

It's like being offered a parcel courier job on a trial, to be extended if you hit your targets, but then being provided with a bike, with a flat tyre.

Why interview for the job in the first place then if you don't think you can do it? Its not as if it is any secret what state we are in.

That may be the case, but any jobs that come up beyond the end of January, are usually firefighting jobs anyway Had he taken the job with us, and been successful, he presumably would have more choices. I don’t know, it’s his call after all, but I can understand why that is the offer that is on the table

I'll be honest, I can't.

If the worst happens and we are in League One next season, you know who'd be great to have at the helm?

Paul Cook.
