It was always a fantastic sight walking down Herries Road for a night match, seeing that sign and the floodlights. It gave you a great feeling and a special atmosphere.

I have some photos somewhere I took at night, I'll  try and dig them out.

Hope you find them, agree with you, it did give out a nice atmosphere.

Walking down Penistone Road for a night match was an incredible feeling

The sight of the floodlights as you walked along the end of Wordsworth

The sound of the ground reaching your ears, pulling you ever faster

Then the sight of that glorious sign as you came through the arches

Everything just oozed class and excitement

Yes it did light up, but the neon elements occasionally failed on random letters

Cost too much to maintain so eventually removed...

Like the bowling alley in Kimberworth where some bulbs used to fail then:

Cavalier 🤣

I think that's a Sierra chaps ...

The cavalier back bumper was narrow revealing the bottom sill and  lower part of quarter panel..

The Sierra covered up the sill all around the bottom giving it the Jelly Mould Look ....

I reckon that photo was taken not long before the roof went on the kop 85 ish ....

Did this light up?

If so does anyone have a similar photo to this but with it all lit up at night?

How much would somebody pay to have this on their man cave/garden bar?

Its beautiful!

It needs, the whole ground needs proper glass sculpturing on Penistone Rd, Leppings Lane and on the South stand.

The sculptures should be centerpiece with a flood of light comprising LED, Laser and HP spots.

There obviously other things to be done in order of priority but there are so many things being left to slide in this time of biological upheaval  at the moment we barely have time to catch our breath.

The thing about night matches is that in the 70s and 80s they were actually quite rare. 42 match seasons, no international breaks. Games over Christmas and Easter, so unlike now none were really scheduled for midweek.

So they were either cup replays or re-arranged games after postponed ones. So often hastily arranged.

But when you were a kid it was magical. Remember going on the Kop for the first time when we played Everton in the League Cup in 77. Totally mesmerised

Great view of the night match scene. My first ever memory of walking down to the ground v Man Utd 1967. We used to park up on Penrith Road near the school, then walk down the little path through to Scraith Wood Drive and join Herries Road. If I remember correctly you don’t  see the ground come into view until nearing the viaduct when the road straightened a bit. It’s been a long time since I’ve walked down that way to a match....one day I might get back.😪

What would have been nice...‘the owner’ could have had this type of sign reinstated on the back of the Kop to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the club. Much cheaper to run on LEDs nowadays and possibly solar powered. Can we have a whip round? 👍

It used to fill you with an inner glow from what seemed like miles away! I could never walk fast enough!

There used to be an inlet on the Ground side of the arches- you wouldn’t call it a car park, more of a green lane access to something or another. On match day it was full of cars and motor bikes/ sidecars and there was a programme seller as you came out on to the main road. Rosettes and bobble hats were compulsory, losing at home was never an option. Just a great flood of 40,000 or so, full of expectation and escaping the seriously hard work in the steel mills and mines. Supporters of both sides walking together and never any trouble. Flat caps as far as the eye could see ( not very far when you’re a lad!) , and the illuminated sign in the distance catching and calling you ...

wonderful days !
