There's enough cowboys on here without another one adding to the wild west show .....

There’s a few bandits ‘n all. Hang around outside Beres on match day, waiting for some unsuspecting father and son combo, going to the first game.
Before they know it, they’ve been upended for a measely sausage roll and a medium with everything on.

Kept us competitive? Relegation to League 1 (twice), £28m of debt and administration...

We were relegated to League One 4 years after he jumped ship.

Notice you didn't respond to your point about supposed higher wages in 1998 than currently. As I pointed out, our wage bill back then was about a third of what it has been recently and unlike now, we weren't spending more than 100% of our turnover on wages.

Our demise may well be traced back to the loans and debts that accrued at that time and Richards is culpable for that, and for jumping ship when we were heading towards relegation from the PL, but signing players like Jonk, Carbone and Di Canio wasn't the problem.

Binning an experienced high profile manager and replacing him with someone who had never worked with big egos at that level was more of a problem, as was selling some of those on for next to nothing and paying more for the likes of De Bilde who couldn't even cut it in the league below.

The wages for players back then was ridiculous, even more so when you calculate for inflation. We were paying a group of players more than we are now even before inflation. Once you add in the 50% inflation and realise the TV money was a fraction it is now, it's utterly scandalous.

You never referred to comparative rates or inflation in your previous post and even so it wasn't utterly scandalous at all. Wim Jonk played nearly 50 games for a Dutch side that did well at 2 World Cups, he played for some of the biggest teams in Europe, Di Canio is often talked about as being one of the best PL overseas players of that era, Carbone was a joy to watch, Hinchcliffe was in the England squad when we signed him.

They were well paid because they were in the top tier of their profession yet we could afford their wages. In 1999 we had a wage bill of £13M and a turnover of £19M, more than acceptable in comparison with where we are at currently.

From Wikipedia

'For the 1998–99 season, Jonk went to join Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £2.5 million, where he was a regular starter for the relegation-threatened side.[14] Apparently, his once-impressive performances for both club and country had gone and he was frequently injured, which caused the Wednesday fans to voice dissent about a clause in his contract which stipulated that he would automatically receive £7,500 per game which he would miss through injury.[15] At the beginning of the 2000–01 season, he announced his retirement from the game.'

I think there is a fair argument that our long slow decline actually started in the madness of the contracts being dished out to players such as Jonk at this time. We have never been back to the premiership since Dave Richards shocking and irresponsible gambles on players who didn't care and managers who didn't have it in em.

Hindsight is always 20/20 vision.

At the time Jonk was one of the best midfielders in the world. Playing regularly for a good Holland side.  Comes to Wednesday, becomes a different player.

Klas Ingesson, very good international midfielder for Sweden, had a brilliant World Cup (94?) that we signed him off the back of. Comes to Wednesday, becomes a different player.

Same can be said about Jordan Rhodes, scored consistently and prolifically at every club he’s played at. The player to offer the goals to push us over the line. Comes to Wednesday, becomes a different player.

All players are gambles, but I wouldn’t say the aforementioned  were irresponsible gambles. More calculated gambles which obviously didn’t pay off.

Jonk, De bilde, O'Donnell, Donnelly, Hinchcliffe,

On paper 4 good buys. In reality 4 colessal turds on high wages (for the time) that ruined the club.

To be fair he could probably count to five.....

Nope. I tell a lie, it was one of the de Boer brothers.

I remember wim Jonks outside of the right foot pass into de bilde to score when we battered Wimbledon 5 nil! His passing was very good just did not have the standard around him he was used to! Barry Horne, Danny sonner, Jim magilton different kettle of fish!!!
