Sheffield Wednesday are plotting a January move for Cardiff City defender Greg Cunningham, Football Insidercan exclusively reveal.

The 29-year-old has entered the final six months of his contract in the Welsh capital and is set to become a free agent this summer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wednesday are looking to sign the left-back on an initial loan deal.

Cunningham has made just five appearances for Neil Harris’ side this season, having struggled with a hamstring problem for the majority of the campaign.

His last start came in the 2-0 defeat at Norwich City shortly before Christmas.

The versatile defender joined Cardiff in a £3.6million deal from Preston North End in July 2018 but has struggled since the move.

He spent the first half of last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, making 10 appearances under Tony Mowbray.

Cunningham has been capped four times by the Republic of Ireland, making his debut in a 3-0 victory over Algeria in May 2010.

Bluebirds boss Neil Harris is looking to shuffle his pack in the January transfer window after a dismal run of form which has yielded just one win in the last five.

Was highly rated at Preston. We dont have a LB, were hardly going to be paying megabucks for a LB under contract etc....so we either take a risk on someone whos got ability but been hindered by ability or we get someone with less ability who has more proven fitness....

If its purely an addition, id be all for this.

Very ordinary, and another player touching 30. Probably League One standard now If we are looking at loans, surely we can find much better than him

Think we'd do well to get a younger, fitter and better left back in January with no money though.

Especially as we haven't got a left back.

Lets face it were shopping in a fairly sparse aisle.

Yeah, but we don’t have to buy one There are plenty of quality left backs with pace and energy in the U23 set ups of the Premier League clubs.

Who are these quality left backs with pace and energy?

The best LBs in u23s would already have been on the radar of clubs better positioned than us though, so not sure how many are still there in January? If so, why are they still at their parent clubs?

Secondly, if you were a Prem club would you wanna loan a promising kid to SWFC right now? I wouldn't, could do the player more harm than good.

Well I agree with the last paragraph, but if we keep signings players like this, that situation will only get worse

As we have no left back, i wouldnt mind Cunningham on a loan / 1.5 year deal if we could, hopefully if we stay up, we could get in another left back in the summer whos younger and more of the mould to move us forward...

This lad was the best player on the pitch at Deepdale first game of  2017 season ....

Therin lays the problem .

Three and a half years later and

Treatment tables and substitute benches warmed and worn out ...

He's coming to Hillsborough?...

You really have to laugh at these people ...

Who are they trying to kid ?
