Another stat you can use for players is how well the team does when they're on the pitch, compared to how well it does when they're not. And here, Joao didn't do very well in either 2016/17 (https://fbref.com/en/squads/bba7d733/2017-2018/s1627/Sheffield-Wednesday-Stats-Championship) or 2017/18 (https://fbref.com/en/squads/bba7d733/2018-2019/Sheffield-Wednesday-Stats). Even this season (https://fbref.com/en/squads/b0ac61ff/2020-2021/s10729/Reading-Stats-Championship) there are a number of Reading players who do better than him by this metric. (Search for "Team Success" on these to see what I'm talking about.)

The only time its good business to sell a 15 goal a season striker, is when you plan to replace him with a 20 goal a season one

When you are skint you sell your best players and replace them with cheaper crapper players...if a bloke is struggling for money he wudnt sell his mondeo and buy a Lamborghini..there isn’t going to be top quality players coming in for a long time
