Goals and Assists, 1990-2020

Recommended Posts

A little project for you all here. Last year I posted who got the most goals and assists for Wednesday in the last decade. This has been expanded to cover from 1990 to the end of 2020.

So, drumroll please - our top 50 goalscorers since 1/1/1990 and to 31/12/2020 are:

1) David Hirst - 103

2) Mark Bright - 70

3) Own Goals - 56

4) Marcus Tudgay - 52

5) Atdhe Nuhiu - 51*

6) Gerald Sibon - 43

7) Fernando Forestieri - 40

8. Steven Fletcher - 38

9) Steve MacLean - 35

10) Andy Booth - 34

11) John Sheridan - 33

12) Gary Hooper - 31

13) Lucas João, Jermaine Johnson - 29

15) Paul Williams - 28

16) Gary Madine - 27*

17) Benito Carbone - 26

18) Chris Bart-Williams, Chris Brunt, Deon Burton, Guy Whittingham - 25

22) Kieran Lee, Gordon Watson - 22

24) Efan Ekoku - 21

25) Neil Mellor, Adam Reach - 20

27) Reda Johnson, Shefki Kuqi, Chris Maguire, Adam Proudlock - 19

31) Michail Antonio, Leon Clarke, Paul Warhurst - 18

34) Paolo Di Canio, Alan Quinn - 17

36) Carlton Palmer, Nigel Pearson, Glenn Whelan - 16

39) Gilles De Bilde, Graham Hyde, Chris Waddle - 15

42) Clinton Morrison, Mark Pembridge, Jordan Rhodes, Danny Wilson - 14

46) Viv Anderson, Barry Bannan, Chris O'Grady, Ross Wallace - 13

50) Niclas Alexandersson, Mark Degryse, Miguel Angel Llera, Tommy Miller, Nigel Worthington - 12

* a couple of the goals are contested, one goal that I think was clearly scored on the line by Nuhiu was credited to Pudil, another given to Madine (at Bramall Lane in the 2-2) was clearly an own goal. David Hirst, of course, scored 5 against Hull in 1990 (Williams was credited with a shot that was going wide before it hit Hirst, but the opener credited to Hirst in the 3-3 vs Chelsea 2 years later is actually turned in by WIlliams)

And our top assist makers since 1990 are:

1) David Hirst - 45

2) Barry Bannan - 41

3) John Sheridan, Chris Waddle - 37

5) Adam Reach - 36

6) Marcus Tudgay - 32

7) Mark Bright - 30

8. Nigel Worthington - 29

9) Chris Bart-Williams, Atdhe Nuhiu - 28

11) Chris Brunt - 27

12) Michail Antonio, Benito Carbone - 25

14) Andy Booth, Tommy Spurr - 24

16) Jermaine Johnson - 23

17) Carlton Palmer, Ross Wallace - 22

19) Deon Burton, Fernando Forestieri, Mark Pembridge - 20

22) Alan Quinn, Gerald Sibon - 19

24) Lucas João, Kieran Lee, Steve MacLean, Paul Williams - 18

28) Chris Lines, Andy Sinton, Guy Whittingham - 17

31) Efan Ekoku, Trevor Francis - 16

33) Lewis Buxton, Wim Jonk, Clinton Morrison, Ian Nolan - 15

37) John Harkes, Gary Hooper, Graham Hyde, Shefki Kuqi, Neil Mellor, Daniel Pudil - 14

43) Peter Atherton, Nigel Jemson, Paul McLaren, Owen Morrison - 13

47) Steven Fletcher, Andy Hinchcliffe, Phil King, Danny Wilson - 12

Note - There are 30 goals remaining unclaimed with the assist missing (either no footage exists, as far as I can tell), or the footage that does exist begins with the goalscorer in possession and there are not match reports online that clarifies. Also note, I have used a slightly more generous version of an assist than some websites - some websites only include the previous player to touch the ball directly to the goalscorer - but these are based on the rules for the FPL Fantasy Football game - e.g. if a player has a shot back off the post, or that the keeper saves, but can't hold on to its an assist, also if they set up an own goal, win a penalty that is scored (although not a handball) or hits a pass/cross which a defender gets a touch but it still just about reaches its intended target, they all count as assists. Some goals don't have assists - solo efforts where a player intercepts the ball.

Shows what a player Hirst was. Viv didn't play for us for too many seasons and got a great goal tally

It shows what a steaming pile of sh*t we've been when it comes to attacking for the majority of the last 30 years when Own Goal is at number 3 and the top 2 both left by 1997

Atdhe Nuhiu:

51 goals (5th), 28 assists (=9th).

That’s quite a record for someone who was constantly abused and ridiculed on here.

Anyone care to reconsider their option?

He did play 756 games though

Didn’t though did he. Stats sites vary but it’s something like 275 appearances, with quite a lot being off the bench.

I'm sorry.

It was a lame attempt at humour.

Shows what quality we've had over that period:

This wouldn't be a bad team with a decent goalkeeper but most of these players were either at the end of their careers or we sold them before their peak.

Hirst

De Canio

Waddle

Sheridan

Whelan

Alexandersson

Palmer

Pearson

Anderson

Worthington

Subs:

Antonio

Brunt

Bright

Forestieri

Carbone

Own Goal played for us for a full thirty years though. You'd expect him to be high up on almost any club's 30-year stats.

And Own Goal didn't manage ANY assists. Useless.

You have to compare that with every other club for it to be a valid statement.

Averaging less than 2 goals a season? I'd offer him a 1 year deal and see if that increases

All this says to me is that @metaframe is right

Despite both being in the top 5 assist makers since 1990, we won’t move forwards until Bannan and Reach are moved on

You’re *still*’missing the point spectacularly.

it’s not whether they score goals or assists — it’s about the mentality of the players and club.

we need a fresh start on and off the pitch.

stats can show whatever you like - how many goals has reach scored in last 2 seasons?
