sheffield_dave
I think I might just set up a direct debit that siphons off a percentage of my wage every month, say 40%, directly to SWFC, with no expectation of any return or value. I’ll also make clear to Chansiri that I’ll happily throw more in when he decides his personal cash flow can’t manage it all, or when he has to sack another manager and staff after 10 games, or when the contracts he offered need paying. That’s what “fans” and “supporters” are for, isn’t it. Not like all you wretched “customers” who only spend what you want and what you can afford based on what value you’re getting for your money. Disgusting.

CircleSeven
This thread had me laughing to myself that’s for sure! I live 100 miles away from Sheffield but have a business there. I can say without hesitation that Sheffield is very much like everywhere else. It’s a big city with people living there from all over the UK and indeed the world. The main thing you notice about Sheffield when you don’t live there is how little people know or care about Sheffield! But this is true of everywhere! Leeds, Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Bristol etc etc. England is hugely London Centric. Beyond that no one knows bugger all about other places other than the cliches! As for the tightness, in my experience it’s a myth. Sheffield has tons and tons of people with stacks of money living there and they spend it as freely as they do anywhere else! There is poverty but you get yourself up to Dore and there are more rich people than anywhere outside London!
gurujuan
This is an interesting thread. There are things in the OP that I can really relate to, and there are traits that are peculiar to Sheffield, and our club in particular. We have an ageing fan base, which is often reluctant to any attempts to modernise. I cannot think of too many clubs, where half the fan base would embrace the appointments of managers like Megson and Pulis. Why is that? It’s partly because a lot of our lot are stuck in the past, but also applaud the outspoken bluntness of managers like Megson and Pulis. What’s to applaud, bluntness is not a good quality in a manager. There is a difference between being blunt, and being honest. We need to change, both as a club, and as a fan base, because without modernising, we will continue to become less relevant

Errol Flashman
You can be as blunt as you want when you're winning games. It's only an issue when you start losing em. Just a bloke. fpowl
Problem chansiri had he went for it we failed now we have to balance the books it will take another year or so to bring the wages back within FFP we will always lose money every club does problem we have is we don’t generate enough cash to have another go so we will stagnate he’s out priced a lot of revenue streams boxes, sponsorships and to some extent ticket prices he needs to be more proactive in generating player sales think these advisors are are advising him commercially based on big cities and Sheffield simply isn’t that commercial and it needs to be marketed accordingly until we get more successful on the pitch ( premier league ) The way he communicates though alienates a lot of fans and those that moan the loaders will get heard. We’re all frustrated and it’s easy to critique when it’s like this problem is what’s the answer? He isn’t going anywhere my thing would be he needs a good review on commercial side be more realistic to the Sheffield market have a plan to improve the playing team over a period of time on our new budget Employ somebody to instil belief or confidence back in the fan base be it a CEO, director of football ( pointless ) or just a spokesperson to better communicate because as a manager cam lose the dressing room it seems chansiri has lost the fan base and no matter what he does Fans will cherry pick he failures ( and there’s a few ) to shout loud he needs to turn perception and mood on its head now

Is there the same in sheffield? Interestingly a lot of Sheffield’s money is still derived from manufacturing, albeit highly automated, in the production of specialised steel. The universities also draw in huge amounts of money and bring young, educated people to the city. HSBC have massive offices in Sheffield including one of their main data centres (well, Tankersly is technically Barnsley I think but loads of Sheffielders live there). There are also huge hospitals who are two of the main employers. It’s one of the few cities where you can live 15 mins from the city centre, the main shopping centre and the countryside. My small company builds houses and apartments and we struggle to get local people to work for us because they are all flat out. Also whatever we build sells in 5 mins. We used to get a box now and again before the crazy price rises. It made for a top day out!

Yes, and there’s plenty who feel as you do Whether we like it or not, football is changing and if we fail to grasp that, and modernise, then we’ll continue to find ourselves at odds with the direction in which football is traveling There’s plenty I don’t like about the way football has changed, but younger people don’t view things that way. If we become irrelevant to younger fans, they won’t buy into it.
TrueOwl
The biggest problem from the very outset was that there was never a plan to begin with. There is nothing to buy into or get behind after 5 years we still don't have an identity either on or off the field. He still doesn't understand us, and he doesn't care to. Language barrier not withstanding, he is a poor communicator who has never directly or via an intermediary communicated a clear mission statement besides vague platitudes about promotion. He's disenfranchised students, and the young, working class fans, small and medium sized local businesses, fired anyone who disagreed with him and comes across as smug and arrogant, and disinterested at the best of times. His press conferences are like investor conferences for a product you can't stand. He's made every mistake in the book and seemingly learned nothing. He's employed and entrusted charlatans who have squandered what little he had and they're still in his ear. The man is utterly hopeless.

We took thousands down to Wembley and Cardiff, I know a few who bought tickets at the pig end because we’d run out in the semi, we had to open the West Stand for the Wickham game, we had the third highest attendance in 92, I think higher than Leeds who won the title. There are so many stats that show that this isn’t true. The support has held up remarkably given our lack of success, all through the years, and when it matters we turn up. That Brighton play off game was a proper sight to see. I’m old enough to remember those games a Filbert St v Arsenal when we outnumbered them every time and they were 2 divisions above us at the time.
