I watched first hand as his expensively assembled Vissel Kobe team with the likes of Podolski, Iniesta, David Villa and Thomas Vermaelan (all of them in their mid 30’s but still capable at J-League level) alongside some good Japanese players flounder in the J-League, get soundly beaten by 2-3 goals every other game and finish a miserable 13th place out of 18 clubs. He was only saved from the sack by winning The Emperors Cup (J-Leagues FA Cup) and chose to step down a few months later since he was under incredible pressure from the fans. He will be Jos 2.0. Interesting perspective. Didn’t realise he had the firepower with what seems a poor league standing. bet Jay Bothroyd did a reyt number on Vissel Kobe too

Under incredible pressure from Japanese fans? Did they stop sending him flowers?
swfc-dan
German's usually fit in well in England, as their football is of a similar pace and physicality. And similar climate. Seems to have a decent record so I'd give him a shot if looking for an option from abroad, rather than Cook. Good experience and CV.

Scrap what I just said then Someone who's seen him first hand over there I'll trust the judgement of. 13th with those big names is a shocking outcome. 1

When Japanese football fans get upset, you know you’ve screwed it. They’re a really mild bunch for the most part, although Urawa Red Diamonds ‘Ultras’ exist and have a reputation here Vissel have a large contingency of foreign fans as well since Kobe has long been a centre for foreign development since the 1880’s. They were much more of what you’d expect when we talk about fans getting to their wits end. What you’d see in the games was a team lacking any kind of cohesion. The plan seemed to be ‘Give it to Iniesta or Podolski and they’ll save us’, whilst any notion of defensive organization and leadership went out of the window. Some have said that the foreign stars and the Japanese players didn’t particularly have good relations and it is something that happens in business in Japan, but there are plenty of former PL players in J League teams who have integrated well and are beloved by their clubs and teammates so I suspect it wasn’t a big factor in Vissel’s troubles. I say Jos 2.0, but thinking further there were also strong comparisons to latter-tenure Carvahal patterns of play when it started to go wrong, that sense of throwing anything at it to see if it worked and ending up toothless and without having enough solidity to make sure you didn’t lose games. Even without that, we really do need a manager/coach who knows this situation we find ourselves in, knows this league, and has tactical awareness (game management, understand opposition threats, adaptability to in-game events) while also being a man manager who can gee up the players. it doesn’t excite many here, but Paul Cook ticks all of these boxes. It has to be him.

He does have a good record overall, for sure. If he were to get the job he may surprise us with how good he is. The adage ‘You're only as good as your last.....’ is there for a reason though. Further, all of the base points (continental style, pedigree with Bayern Munich, style of play he employs, his previous jobs having huge financial and personnel resources) work against him as far as his suitability for our club at this time go.
