Alternatively, he was a master tactician, a real scholar of the game and did his homework and adjusted his team to exploit weaknesses in whichever opposition we were up against.

Putting the same team out over and over again may be desireable when you've got a Top 2 team to begin with.  We didn't have such a team, and the reason why has nothing to do with Monk.

Yeah pretty much sums Monk up. We were going along nicely when he was assessing what he’d inherited . Bruce had set us up in a certain way, and when he left, Bullen saw us through pre season by continuing along the same lines. Monk was brought in, and initially was content to allow things to progress, while getting his feet under the table. We reached the half way point handily placed, sitting third in the table. Moreover, if we could add some pace to the side in the January window, particularly up top, there was no reason why we couldn’t challenge for the play offs. No need to rock the boat.
However, that’s exactly what Monk did, the minute he decided to impose his own ideas, we fell away alarmingly. Yes he wasn’t helped by the injury to Fletcher, but I thought at the time, too much emphasis was put on that. Basically, Monk lost control, and was clueless on how to turn things around.

You don't tell half your squad and half your first team in January you won't be getting a new contracts, then expect them to run through walls for you. The guy was a complete fool, who half the time thought, the team had played well, when we had been smash by footballing power houses like Blackburn, Luton and Rotherham.

Do you really think he came in in September and just allowed us to cruise control for 3 months before putting his mark on it in December and that’s why it all went wrong.

I think we were poor and a bit scrappy the whole time under him tbh. Difference was Westwood, Hutchinson and Fletcher. With those three in the side in the scrappy games you have a decent chance of getting on the right side of the tight margins. Once he kicked out the first two and the latter got injured we fell on the wrong side of the margins and couldn’t get a victory.

I can’t really see a big change in how we set up or approached things between the first and second half of the season really

Spot on.

I’ve explained this a million times on this forum. Contract talks often begin 6 months or longer  before the end of the current one so the Players will know if they aren’t being offered one or not. You really think they would just carry on playing if the manager says yeah don’t worry about it you’ll get another 3 years but the agent hasn’t heard anything from the club? If anything they should appreciate the honesty.
