Interesting comments re Monk

Recommended Posts

Monk finished mid table like every other manager we have had since we were promoted - the only exception being Carlos in his first two seasons where we spent so much money we shattered the FFP rules.

He was no better or worse than the other managers we have had.

Monk was a dreadful appointment. Said it when he was announced, that he had failed at all of his previous clubs and he was on a downwards trajectory. Monk undone the foundations that Bruce had put in place. Pulis has a tough job to stabilise us after Monk but if he can keep us up and lay the foundations, things may pick up eventually. Hopefully DC, allows Pulis to do things his way and he might do what it seemed Bruce looked like doing.

Completely agree with this. Bruce had put some solid foundations in and Monk destroyed that and implemented that losing mentality back into the players and club.

Monk was the poor sap that had to do the dirty work of clearing the club out of certain individuals - that had to be done - couldn't NOT be done.

All whilst not being given anything to replace them with

Nothing

A defender with a leg broken in two places being a prime example

The article is unfinished.  Should read:

.....and then when things went from bad to worse he started switching players around.  We didn't know what positions we were playing or whether we would be on the bench or even frozen out from playing.

Tony Pulis has a reputation for playing players out of position and also for freezing players out

Some fans are in for a real big shock if they dont already know this

“He decided to go for something more strategic in terms of formations. Being hard to beat, giving the ball more to the opposition and playing more counter-attacking football.

“It did work, but, in my opinion, that’s a way of playing where you will succeed in a short space of time, but you will become a surviving team in the Premier League. You need to have a clear identity, like we had before, to be able to establish yourself.”

I find that an interesting comment.

Leicester won the league by playing a lot of counter attacking football and it continues to serve them well to this day.

This has been something he's been criticised for at every club he's been at.

I think he tries to be too clever for his own good and ends up confusing players because they dont know what's being asked of them.

Then he wonders why they are making loads of individual mistakes.

He probably has some good ideas but when you are dealing with limited players there is a lot to be said for simplicity.

Whilst I think he was always on a hiding to nothing given the state of the club I agree that he also made things too difficult. It’s ok if you’ve got top players who have a bit of intelligence about them but ours don’t. You will get more sense out of trying to train my cat in football tactics than some of our lot.

Keep it simple and work hard. Hopefully that’s something Pulis will be able to bring in. It won’t be good to watch but hopefully it will be effective.

Alternatively, he was a master tactician, a real scholar of the game and did his homework and adjusted his team to exploit weaknesses in whichever opposition we were up against.

Putting the same team out over and over again may be desireable when you've got a Top 2 team to begin with.  We didn't have such a team, and the reason why has nothing to do with Monk.

So far from a master tactician as you could possibly get. Unless playing players out of position and getting hammered home and away are top tactics.

They have the pace of Jamie Vardy be interesting to see how they do when he is finished.

It was a difficult job. But his tactics, formations and decisions were truly bizarre.

A better manager would have done a better job. We will see what was possible with Pulis.

We will see. Pulis record is pretty good even if his style of achieving results is not not so pretty.

What you’ll see in Pulis is a manager who commands the players respect and a manager who knows how to set a team up.

Two vitally important things when you have a limited squad.

Who did he freeze out?

Loads mate

  • Cameron Jerome
  • Saide Berinho
  • James Beattie
  • Jermaine Pennant
  • Cyrus Christie
  • James Chester
  • Dave Kitson
  • Jose Campana
  • During his time at Stoke The PFA had to be called in to settle player disputes, including contract problems, and Pulis freezing out out-of-favour players from the training ground.
  • Apprentices - One apprentice recalls running with the ball and being frozen out afterwards without any explanation as to what he had done that was so wrong.

The list is long
