Before I submit mine, are we talking about their performances for England, or overall? Barnes for example was brilliant for Liverpool but mostly disappointing for England:

Just England........................thats why i didnt pick Gerrard.

OK then:

D Seaman

P Shilton

D James

A Cole

G Neville

S Campbell

R Ferdinand

S Pearce

T Butcher

T Alexander-Arnold

T Adams

C Waddle

F Lampard

P Gascoigne

B Robson

O Hargreaves

D Platt

D Anderton

T Sheringham

G Lineker

M Owen

H Kane

A Shearer

Midfield is clearly where so many of our disappointments have been. So many great club players have not performed for England (Barnes, Gerard, Scholes, McManaman), even including Lampard was a stretch. We have had a paucity of quality wide players too in my 30 plus years of watching, hence Anderton's inclusion.

The only one i took a flier on was Lawrie Cunningham who only won a few caps but was a supremely gifted player who should have won many more than he did.

Mind you , he wasn`t on his own during the 70,s , there were a whole raft of talented "maverick" style players who only got a tiny fraction of the caps they deserved.

Rodney Marsh, Frank Worthington, Stan Bowles, Alan Hudson, Charlie George, Peter Osgood, Duncan McKenzie, Gordon Hill.........and yes......Tony Currie  (i know he was from the dark side but to anyone too young to have seen him , he was a fantastic player)  were all never trusted and Revie picked guys like Trevor Cherrie, Brian Greenhoff, David Johnson, Bob Latchford etc.

All decent players but not a patch on the ones mentioned..............................and this was the era when we missed out on qualifying for TWO consecutive world cups..........................i wonder why !

I'm surprised how many I picked from 2002 - 2006 squads that ultimately didn't achieve anything they were capable of!

I then look at the current talent England have and think this is some of the best talent we've had in decades!

and If I had to pick a team Id go

              Seaman

TAA Ferdinand Terry Cole

Scholes Hargreaves Gascoigne

    Sterling Kane Rooney

He was decent for England I thought. Toyed with Ince or Carrick. Don’t remember enough of Hoddle to legitimately include him.

Hargreaves was decent but think I'd have gone for Ince, he was a better all round player and did a good job at Euro 96 and in qualifying through a tough group for World Cup 98.

Shows the sparsity of defensive midfield options (and perhaps the unattractiveness of the position) that few have selected a defensive/holding midfielder at all.

As for Scholes, his was brilliant in his early days for England and as you say wasted at international level after Keegan moved on, one of Svens biggest failures was trying to shoehorn him into a position that didn't suit him.
