Middlesbrough supporter here. Well you are following in Boro's footsteps after appointing Monk then Pulis in succession ... Woodgate next then Warnock!

Here are my considered views on Tony Pulis having seen every Boro home game and around 75% of away matches whilst he was Boro Manager.

On his appointment he was seen by many supporters (including myself) as a solid choice. Experienced, knowledgeable, passionate and with decent contacts in the game. We knew Pulis would go for physical, experienced players every time so expect the same ... but that has its limitations. For me the game is about winning and if the performances are positive as well then that's a bonus. However, by time Pulis left Boro my lifetime love of football had slowly but surely been squeezed out of me and that was down to the managers repeated and predictable negative tactics. Some examples;

  • One man up front at all times ... often with no support behind him.
  • Disgraceful treatment of our best striker and top goalscorer (Britt Assombalonga), publicly lambasting him at every opportunity.
  • In the 2017/18 two-legged Play-Off Semi-Final against Aston Villa we went behind after 15 minutes of the 1st leg (at home) ... despite this Boro defended for the first 175 minutes of the 180  ... mustering only one shot on target over the two legs.
  • 2018/19 FA Cup at home to League 2 Newport County. We go 1-0 up after 50 minutes and it is everyone back behind the ball as usual. Newport nick an injury-time equaliser then (deservedly) beat us in the replay.
  • In March 2018/19 having lost only 1 game in 10 and playing Brentford who had only won once away in 16 matches ... Boro were winning 1-0 at home and Pulis brings our ONLY striker off and puts a defender on! ... we go on to lose 1-2 and then lose next 5 games on the bounce which cost us a play-off place.
  • 2018/19 ... finish 7th scoring only 49 goals in 46 games. Only one team of the other 19 outside the bottom 4 score less goals than Boro.

I could go on ... but very much like watching 'Pulis-ball' ... you will quickly get bored.

Whilst I am sure Pulis will keep you up (the obvious priority), beyond that I fear the worst for you as Pulis is anti-football. I hope I'm wrong as I have a lot of respect for Wednesday supporters.

Did you enjoy it more when Woodgate was there.?

Not being funny or anything. But you were flirting with relegation. did you just think i am glad Tony has gone.

Don’t think he will be integral to Pulis’ plans like he has been with other managers. Not sure he will be satisfied with being set piece taker. If he isn’t as important as other managers have made him, he won’t be offered more money than he already gets. That will test his loyalty, particularly with him living so far way from Sheffield & being wanted by all the championship clubs that play better football

I don't think it will be the, everything must go through Bannan show. like with previous managers. but I do think he will still be an important player to Pulis and will play every game.

His chief creator role will be handed over to long throw specialist Paterson

I think the point they are probably making is they are struggling and they are some of the best at it.  So its going to be very difficult for Lowe to do the same.

You could also say no big club has taken a chance on them just like we haven't done with Lowe. Maybe they see the next step as being to high for the footballing level they are currently operate at with there brand of football.

Lowe wouldn’t be competing against Klopp, Mourihno, Guardiola, Ancellotti, Arteta, Nuno, Potter and others, or against teams spending 250m per transfer window. Lowe would be competing with Cocu, Warburton, Harris, Ismaël and teams with the budget of Rotherham, Wycombe, Blackburn and Cardiff

i think he would have been able to take us clear of relegation. I think Cook & Wagner would too. I don’t want to pay my hard earned money to be bored. Others are fine with that. Different folks, different strokes

Ultimately you want to see us get promoted though. I just think not only would we have a better chance of achieving that under Pulis but also a better chance of staying there aswell.

Once Lowe gets experience and proves his style works in the championship then I wouldn't be against him here. But more tend to fail then succeed when they step up to the higher levels and now is not the time to gamble with it.

And how often does a manager on the slide make a comeback and guide a team from where we are to where we want to be?

He failed at WBA, failed at Boro and has been out of work for 18 months. In most other professions at his age that would mean retirement. I hope he can pull it off but there are no guarantees.

Maybe not. As you say no guarantees. But at this moment in time he is a better option then Lowe with what he has to work with.

Depends how you define failure.. I’d say he succeeded at WBA with a top half finish, didn’t take them down. They prove time and again they’re a bottom 3 prem or top 6 championship team so anything better than that is success.

Boro he got the play offs which is success even if you don’t make it up. No guarantees when Fulham and Villa were in there too. Second season he failed but it’s fine margins.. only didn’t get there due to 6 consecutive losses near the end

Would take him achieving that here. Even if we don’t go up it will leave us in a better place than we are now

Saw this quote from him:

"People go on about my style of play. But I tell you what I do – I go into football clubs, I try to find out what systems suit the players and I try to get the damnedest out of those players. That’s what I’ve done everywhere I’ve been.”

That’ll do for me.

Generally quite a positive poster but have to say im a bit gutted. Wanted an appointment to unite the fanbase and give us a clear vision and philosophy and something to believe in.

Maybe we can cope with 18 months of him before a more progressive appointment, as others have said he will guarantee survival.

Will give him my full support, there's way too much negativity about him all over social media which obviously doesn't help anyone

Good luck TP,  maybe your experience will mean this job wont eat you up like it has many others.

At 'Boro, Bamford and Traore were flogged over Pulis' head, which affected the way the club played.
