OFFICIAL - TONY PULIS APPOINTED SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY MANAGER

Recommended Posts

Let’s just see how it goes. The football was excellent to watch under Carlos but didn’t get us there. Perhaps a more robust approach might have, with the money to go with it.

We don’t have the personel to play that way any more and we’ve taken a more pragmatic approach since Bruce and perhaps even Jos.

Many quite liked it when Megson whipped our team into shape and made us nasty. Is that just because he was a Wednesday fan? Because Pulis is the same.

I must admit I haven’t wanted Pulis here because he’s old fashioned, wears caps, bright white trainers and will play 6 defenders at home.  But on balance if it wasn’t for the peripheral stuff and the stigma we’d never get a manager with his cv in our position. What’s his lowest position in the last decade? 7th in the championship? DC needs guidance/challenging and contacts too and the club needs big characters generally, not managers cutting their teeth.  I was concerned he would sack off youth but at Boro he brought a few through.

He isn’t the manager many want, but perhaps he will turn out to be the manager we need.

Good post.

If true about a long contract .. no.

Yeah, that's what concerns me that, plus his last spell at this level and the time he's had out of the management game. I'd have preferred a more forward thinking long term appointment, it feels like it might be smart in the shirt term but if it's a longer spell then it will be costly to rebuild with Pulis and to eventually replace him and rebuild again. Let's hope he surprises some of us and still has something about him and the drive to prove his doubters wrong and to be a success again.

Wotcha dudes, it's a done deal & some may not like him but the important thing is to get behind the players, covid allowing. Keep the faith,  we'll all be back one day & when that happens make some noise & let everyone know how big Wednesday are. UTO

Good luck to him. Hope he's a success. Can't say he was one of my preferred choices or that he excites me as an appointment. Hopefully he's still got it. He didn't do that well in his last stint in the Championship, hopefully he'll do better here.

It feels like a desperate short sighted appointment to be honest but he's done it before at this level a long time ago and he's held his own solidly in the top flight fit for a number of years.

I'd have preferred a Bruce type appointment or a more forward thinking appointment of a manager on the rise but let's hope Pulis proves his doubters, some of us and myself wrong.

Can you tell me, why is this appointment short sighted?

Also, what is a Bruce type appointment?

Hate this argument. It’s lazy and assumes that only one man , playing one brand of football can keep us up. It’s nonsense.

Cook, Lowe, Wagner, Cowleys would have kept us up by playing a more positive and enjoyable brand of football than Pulis.

wagner 56 goals from 46 games when he got promoted and then won the play offs without a player scoring a goal but he got them and doesnt matter that he played in a negative way . ...............................................  ....cowleys 47 goals from 39 for hudders dont sound to positive to me  either

I meant in the sense of building something long term, successful or not but still being able to see a way forward, a philosophy or a plan. That's what we arguably couldn't see with Monk. DC backed him patiently but it was hard to see what Monk was trying to do. I was hopeful that we'd appoint someone like Cook, Lowe or Johnson, and build something gradually to believe in.

Perhaps Pulis can do something like that but in his own way but he's getting on in footballing terms, he was out of the game for a while and I worry, like Monk that he might be on the decline or a downwards trajectory compared with his past successes?

Also, I meant a Bruce type appointment in the sense of being a Championship level specialist, proven at getting teams up or a mix of pragmatic football and attacking or high intensity football or something along those lines.

Cook, hated by Wigan fans,

Lowe, up and coming and might have worked

Wagner, got Huddersfield promoted through the play offs without winning a game in normal time

Cowleys, well look what they did at Huddersfield  😂😂

so from that list there is Lowe, who is already employed.

“Cook, hated by Wigan fans,” if you only read and acknowledge a small minority of their fans. Do your research

“Wagner got Huddersfield promoted” playing attractive football as I previously stated.

Cowleys. When I look what they did at Huddersfield, the kept them up playing decent football as I previously stated

You identify Lowe as a viable option given that employed managers often move clubs. Lowe himself left Bury for Plymouth

So you’re agreeing with me ? ? ?

Not a popular appointment but a very pragmatic one.

Let's get behind him and watch him turn our club around and start heading in the right direction.

Let's hope so, it might not be a exciting or inspiring appointment but so be it. Hopefully he'll prove many of us and his doubters wrong and turn out to be a smart appointment. The last appointment was a disaster, let's hope DC's got it right this time.
