Analysis | Comparing our signees to players we missed out on or released

Recommended Posts

The main disappointment, was that we didn’t sign Clarke-Salter and Sanderson. I can understand why though, as although they would be an improvement on what we have, both right wing back, and left sided centre back are areas where we do have options. Leko may also turn out to be one that got away, but we’ll see. Stand out signing for me, is Izzy Brown

Thread to track the players we were linked with but who failed to sign.  This will be used to show the kind of players Monk is interested in and how the players that slipped away compare to the ones we signed instead.

Attackers

Jonathan Leko, Striker/Winger, Birmingham City

Wednesday were linked with a £1m signing of Leko this off-season but he chose to stay close to home and sign for the Blues instead.

Leko made his debut against the Owls yesterday, and won Birmingham City fans' MOM award despite only playing 25 minutes at the end of the game.  He had a great chance blocked by Van Aken and was able to drive City forward with purpose.

Kenneth Zahore, Striker, Millwall

Chansiri pulled out of the deal for the West Brom striker despite strong rumours that he was about to sign.  He ended up at Millwall instead and has not featured for them yet.

The Wednesday front office were asked to pay a very high contribution to his wages and were worried that he would take time to get up to speed.

Ross Stewart, Striker, Ross County

Ross County wanted a 'significant sum' to let Stewart leave.  This was rumoured to be between 1 and 2 million quid, but Wednesday didn't come close.

He already has 2 goals and an assist in the Scottish Prem this season as well as 2 goals in the cup.

Lee Gregory, Striker, Stoke

Gregory came on this weekend for Stoke as they won 2-0.  He has a goal in three appearances but he always seemed a backup option for the Owls.

Who Sheffield Wednesday signed instead:

Wednesday chose to sign Elias Kachunga to fill the Striker/Winger role when the Leko deal fell through. . Kachunga was quiet in the same game but scored a lovely headed goal in the League Cup against Rochdale.

Callum Paterson seems like a great piece of business from Cardiff.  Half a million quid for a fans favourite who works his socks off.   He nearly scored against Birmingham, heading narrowly wide in just his second appearance.

Jack Marriott was brought in on loan from Derby on a much lower wage than they would have had to pay for Zahore.  Jack came on late against Birmingham City and had one chance, which he pulled wide.

Midfielders

Andre Green, Winger, Free Agent

The free agent still hasn't signed for anyone and is likely asking for high wages.  Wednesday seem to have moved on and no one else has signed him yet.

Jacob Murphy, Winger, Newcastle United

Jacob had a great pre-season and some good cup performances, so Steve Bruce has decided to keep him at the club this season.

Her form was rewarded with 16 mins in the Premier League.  The talented winger has a goal and assist in 3 cup games.

Who Sheffield Wednesday signed instead:

It was long known that Monk wanted to bring Josh Windass to return.  Took a few weeks but he has been a revelation and one of the first names on the team sheet.

He has 2 goals and 1 assist since his return.  £500k seems a bargain.

Izzy Brown arrived on loan from Chelsea after several injured seasons.  His most recent spell was with Luton where he shined.  Early performances have been impressive but the injury bug has hit him.

Turning his attention to youth, Chansiri secured the signing of Fisayo Dele-Bashiro from Man City.  He has tons of potential and his strong body and surging runs forward are something Wednesday fans have wanted since the loss to Hull at Wembley.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael Hector, Centre Back, Fulham

Monk tried a cheeky loan bid on deadline day to bring Hector back to Hillsborough.  He has looked out of his depth in the Premier League but is not keen on dropping back into the Championship.  A Fulham injury at CB, made them reluctant to move Hector out.

He was left out of the squad for today's game against the Pigs.

Ryan Bennett, Centre Back, Swansea City

Swansea snapped up Bennett on a free after he was released by Wolves.  He reportedly turned down a loan offer from Wednesday on Deadline Day.

He did not feature in Swansea's defeat to Huddersfield yesterday.

Jake Clarke-Salter, Centre Back, Birmingham City

The Chelsea player was available on loan and ended up retuning to the Blues.  City fans were very happy with the move.

He did not feature against Wednesday this weekend.

Frederico Venancio, Centre Back, Lugo

A return of the man from Portugal was rumoured early in the window but never materialised.  He has moved to CD Lugo on loan and is playing in the Spanish Segunda.

He made his debut this weekend, earning a clean sheet.

Dion Sanderson, Centre/Right Back, Sunderland

It seems shocking that Sanderson hasn't been snapped up by a Championship team.  Instead he heads to League One Sunderland after impressing at Cardiff in 2019.

He is yet to feature in their match day squad.

Who Sheffield Wednesday signed instead:

Monk brought in Aden Flint on loan from Cardiff instead who played well this weekend against Birmingham City.  The towering defender was solid as rock in the air and unthreatened by the City attack.

Chey Dunkley was signed but has been out with a lingering injury since his move from Wigan.

Released Players

Morgan Fox joined Stoke but has been injured recently.  He started most games for the Potters but hasn't received good ratings from fans.  Steven Fletcher also joined Stoke and picked up an early injury.  Despite this, he scored his first goal this past weekend.  Sam Hutchinson joined Pafos in Cyprus where he is making his debut today - Adthe Nuhiu also went to Cyprus to join Apoel where he has yet to make a significant impact.  Sam Winnall hasn't played for Oxford United yet but Fernando Forestieri has come on as a sub three times for Udinese without impact.  Derby tried to sign Connor Wickham who isn't getting a sniff for Crystal Palace, but he's stuck in limbo.  Alessio da Cruz ended his Parma nightmare by moving to Groningen on loan.  He made his debut today off the bench at the same time as Arjen Robben came on for the same team.

Great post mate - thank you for doing this - interesting read

Leko looks a good player. We might regret letting him get away. Murphy would have been a good catch but we just don't have that kind of money. Hector would have been brilliant but again can we afford him.

Andre Green, I'd like to see us put a low ball wage offer in for him. If it's not enough we move on. I just think he might come good given time.

Wow, imagine Arjen Robben coming on to attack from one wing and Da Cruz down the other. From the sublime to the ridiculous.

Disappointed slightly not to get Zohore. We lack a striker that plays with his back to goal as an option.

Overall I think we've recruited really well again. We look to have a real work ethic, epitomised by Paterson who is my pick of the signings.

The experience & communication skills Flint possess are a welcome addition too. With him Iorfa, Dunkley etc we are going to be a threat from set pieces I would think. Plenty of hight to worry the opposition.

To say none of the departed would get in the team is a bit bizzare. Fox fletcher and Murphy would all be there or there abouts ( funnily enough the three we seemed to want to keep) and hutch would have been a far better shout to come on instead of pelepussy to shore things up. But they are gone and we move on. Overall fairly happy with the ins and outs but as per the other thread still think we need a bit more guile up front?
